Does anyone make any mounted 15mm female figures? I'm looking for a suitable figure to represent Princess Hortense of Pelle-Melle (the beloved ruler of my Ruritanian, SYW country). At the moment the fair princess is being represented by a Peter Pig female pirate (who, poor lass, has a face like a bag of spanners) and I'd prefer to have a figure on horseback. Failing that, does anyone make women riding in coaches? |

Most of the 15-18mm female figures I've seen for this period are on foot – and I doubt you'll get a "looker" in a figure of that size (there are rumours Tony Barton did some Napoloenic female camp followers, who would undoubtedly have had nice faces, but he has never released them). Have you considered a head-swap as it's just a one-off? A nice hussar/frei korps figure with a female head would do the job. |

There was a costume drama type female mounted figure given away with a magazine last year, not sure which one I'm afraid. |

Damsels would ride side saddle, which may not pose that great of a problem. You would actually need the upper torso of the female figure to fasten upright on the saddle. The rest, with body putty, would drap to one side with a visable dainty boot underneath the skirt. Prior to the above step, you would need to find a suitable horse with saddle. That would mean an Essex or Minifig horse. A seated female; the Essex 18th c. Coach does have a seated passenger (general bare headed) but that could be easily reworked. Further to my earlier post – Minifigs do two civilian packs in their 16th/17th Century ranges, 998X and 999X. I don't think any of these are mounted, but you could ask them whether there are any female figures to use the heads. At £2.15 GBP a pack they aren't horrendously expensive. |

Thanks for the answers guys. I'll look into those suggestions. The 'costume drama' figure sounds interesting. I have got a potential figure for a head-swap lined up. I've got a female mage (I think from Chariot) whose head looks like it might to fit on the body of a Minifigs general. However, my past attempts at conversions haven't been terribly successful and I'm afraid I'll just end up with two decapitated figures. I was hoping there might be a vivandiere or something like that out there. But if all else fails I shall resort to surgery

- The giveaway figure would have been the cantinière from Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy if memory serves. She may even be available still but, sitting side-saddle on a donkey, would probably be of limited use as royalty
Another option might be to use/convert a Marlburian officer figure in periwig and long coat skirts? Otherwise my only suggestion would be to try the "Three Musketeers" and "Fantasy" ranges of various manufacturers. |

I've tracked down the copy of WSS. It was issue 42 and Caliver apparently still has some. As Musketier says a cantniere on a donkey won't look particularly regal but perhaps my princess is doing a Marie Antionette? Does anyone happen to know who the figure was manufactured by? |

Museum does a serving wench that's rather good in their 15mm "Pirates" range and several female nudes in their "Hordes" range as well as some additional female nudes in their "Early Greek" collection. None are mounted, but are all excellent conversion material and relatively inexpensive. The nudes can be dressed with a combination of paint job and a bit of green stuff, and the heads and torso's could be used for mounted conversions. museumminiatures.co.uk Bill |

Thanks for tracing that picture Chef! That's the one they gave away with WSS – and seeing as she's sitting downright sideways and to the right, rather than side-saddle to the left as a proper lady would, SJ can probably forget her. Perhaps there's a noble lady riding in some medieval range? Dress may be easier to paint or adapt than basic pose. |

Thanks for the links guys. I think conversions are a bit beyond me so I'll probably give the Museum figures a miss (mind you their website is well worth a visit even if only to check out the paint jobs in their gallery section). The Warmodelling vivandiere isn't quite what I'm looking for – apart from anything else it's a strange looking beast that she is sitting on – but I might order some at some stage because I think, donkey apart, that they are nice looking figures. Supercilius Maximus and Musketier, I have ended up following your suggestions and put in an order for some Minifigs 17th century and Medieval civilians. Apparently the latter does include a mounted queen so I may be able to saw the top of her head off and replace it with a tricorne (which is a conversion that even I might be able to manage) I also got carried away and ordered some Hussite camp followers who I think could be made to look suitably 18th century picture And some Hussite priests who are going to go into battle alongside my Spanish Peninsular guerillas. picture So I haven't exactly found what I was looking for but I have found a way of spending even more money on figures

So you missed out on the WSS free gift of a 5mm cantentiere on a horse earlier this year. Sad, because they repeated it a month later. |

The female (maid marion?) is indeed riding side saddle! There is also a standing version of her. Hope that helps! Tom Dye GFI |

Thanks Tom, I'm in the UK so I have put in the order with Keep Wargaming (I've been buying lots of figures from them while I wait for Minifigs UK to get back up to speed after the takeover). I really like Minifigs' packs of civilians. I recently got hold of the Western townsfolk and there's lots of useful figures in that one as well. In fact my armies seem to be acquiring as many camp followers as they've got troops. |

I have been toying around with different ways to blend in more civilian types in my modern games! Always been around in wars, presented their set of problems for the combatants, why not for the gamer? There is also the great looks for a diorama when seen on the table, too! Those western figs are really nice, aren't they? Some of the best of the range IMHO! Good luck on your project! Tom Dye GFI |

Thanks Tom, The Western figures are great. I particularly like Clint Eastwood, the town drunk and the bartender with the shotgun. What I like about civilian figures is that they are usable for so many different periods. Most of those western townsfolk will look fine in a Peninsular war skirmish, alongside pirates or following the drum with my SYW figures. |

For our Invasion of Britain (1757) I used the Austrian Tyroleans and a horde of religious types for the Convent settings. For some of the gamekeepers, Mastiffs were added to the bases. The AWI minutemen also have some nice options as well as Spanish Guerillas. Cheers, |

Sadly, I am yet to find a figure to represent the fair princess on horseback. The Minifigs princess is riding side-saddle but is definitely in medieval dress and a head-swap is not practicable because she is wearing a wimple. The search continues
