Hey folks,

Just thought I'd share what I'd come up with trying to game District 9. First off, this is a useful website:

link

It gives all kinds of extra details about the Prawns, such as them working in factories, etc. (in the movie they just seem unemployed and penned up in the slums, however in all the marketing fluff they are portrayed as mingling more closely in human society). It also has Prawn font for you to download.

MNU uses Casspirs and Ratels for their armoured vehicles. You can get these in 15mm from QRF.
link

The D9 blog also refers to an FA-155 Skyhawk, so obviously there's some Near Future modeling opportunity as at least some Prawn technology has been copied, contrary to the impression the movie gives (possibly the power source is the issue).

The SADF (South African Defence Force) uses the R4 rifle, essentially the same as the Galil. PPig Israelis would do to model them, although the helmet is different. The South African Army also has some female infantry, so you could use any appropriate models for that (probably only PPig). SA Police also regularly pack a lot of heat, lots of opportunity for mayhem there (even without District 9 stuff).

An interesting blog on the South African military (together with some funky SF ideas):

Anybody got any other interesting tidbits, any District 9 AARs or pictures of their painted stuff?

Just doesn't do it for me, somehow. Minis battles betweem aliens and social workers? Might be worth about five minutes' visceral enjoyment to watch a few children's services case workers get blown to bits, but after that, I fear the magic would be gone.

Did you actually see the movie fire starter?

LOL.

GZG has some "not-Prawns" in their 15mm range. Not sure what you'd build the battlesuit out of; kitbashing from DP9's Heavy Gear and Jovian Chronicles lines perhaps?

In a larger scale, the Dragyiri Slaves from Dark Age suit the bill, at least from the neck down; you'd need some head swaps. Plus, they've all got spears – time to scratchbuild some guns.

How about some of the Geonosians from the WOTC Star Wars Clone Strike line? Some conversion work would be needed.

Captain Apathy "Did you actually see the movie fire starter?"

Well, I saw it, and that's pretty much what I got out of it.

I don't think there's a scene in the movie where the humans "visit" the prawns without being heavily armed. What kind of social workers do you people have in your area???

I'm running with WotC Verpine figs for Prawns…the closest thing in my box to the mech suit is a Clix Mongoose figure….planning on adding a couple of Tau suit guns to the arms and a repaint….

Sort of like saying Ambush Alley is like minis battles with civilian contractors and guys with AK47s :)

Just read the South African news. There's plenty of gaming potential even in real life.

Hmm. I did a quick Google image search for "Apartheid" and came up with some stuff about South Africa, and lots and lots on similar measures elsewhere. Won't say where.

Perhaps one could play the "Prawn" game in a different geographical setting, where the "Prawn" are the indigenous population?*

I think the AT-43 Cogs Hunters would be a good start:
