Got this computer moderated rule set yesterday and had a few test games.

As my table isn't finished and I can't bring my self to play on a half finished table, I run what you might call a simulation.

The rules aren't just rules but a Army and OOB creator, which is kinda fun all in it self.

I made two small AWI armies, and made a battle a 4 vs 4 battalion, with one gun each and each a company of light soldiers.

Now I expected the british to win, as 4 battalions of american(3 of them militia) can't stand agasint 4 battalions of british and Hessain.

I drew up the movments and placemnets in paint to keep track of units.
Here's An AAR of the second test battle.

This is a generic battle, with some known names and units, but not based on any battle.

The american side had
George Washington as Commander in chief, with direct control over 1 6pdr gun

a Brigade under Nathanael Greene
With 2nd New York Continental(300 men) and 1st New York Militia(450 men)

And a brigade under Benedict Arnold
With 2nd New York Militia (450 men)
3rd Pensylvania Militia (400 Men)
1st Pensylvania Rifles (70 men)

The british had
Sir Henry Clinton as commander in chief with derect control over a 6pdr gun

1st brigade under George Wallace
23rd Regiment of Foot (360 men)
33rd Regiment of Foot (350 men)

Second brigade under John O'Hara
Regiment von bose (400 men)
71st Regiment of Foot (280 men)
Guard light infanty company (90 men)


The deployment was From left to right 23rd and 33rd faceing 2nd new york continentals and 1st new york militia

Then the british 6pdr directly facing the american one.

Then von bose, 71st and light infantry faceing 2nd new york militia 3rd pensylvania militia and pensylvania rifles.

round 1
The british all advanced thoward the american line, the 33rd took light casualties from the american 6pdr, while the 2nd new york militia also lost a minimal few from the british 6pdr.

While Greene's brigade stayed put, arnold advanced his brigade agasint O'hara's, the two brigades just stopping 70 paces from eachother.

Round 2.
Wallace's brgade continued to advance agasint Greene, while fire erupted on the right flank between Arnold and O'hara, von bose lost heavy as did the 2nd new york militia, pensylvania militia and 71st fired at eachother will some effect, the rifles and light company did their own little battle on the far right flank fire at little effect but kept them self busy.
Wallace's brigade came within 70 paces of Greene and the americans opend fire, 23rd lost a lot of men but kept it's cool, the 33rd came out if the volley with little damige, even tho they also tasted canister.

Round 3
the 23rd was now in range and opend up on on the continentals but got back what they gave, and both regiments lost many a good man. the 33rd gave a thundering volley at the 1st new york militia, the militia fired back but made a quick retreat after it.

O'hare and Arnold were locked in heavy combat, with musketballs flying and hittiing men left and right, the fire tok heavy tolls on both sides, at this point arnold was hit, and taken back to his own lines.

Round 4
The colonel of the 23rd decided it was time to act, he gave order to charge and the men made their joy of the order clear by 3 huzzas. they charge and the continentals gave a scaterd volley at 25 paces, they lost their nerve and the fire was very ineffective, the 23rd stabed and cut down a dozen continentals before the americans fled, 300 paces back

33rd did not charge they were going to let lead decide the day not steel, they gave a volley that cut down 40 militia men, the millita had just given of a volley, but it was not effective, and the return fire they got was to much sevral men started to flee from the ranks, the colonel kept his men togeather, but could not stop them from retreating.

Arnold returned he was only lightly wounded, he could see his men wavering and shouted some words of encurigment, and talked to them about honour and duty. it stadied his men, for some time, but the fire from the british and germans were just to much, while arnold was with the 2nd new york militia the 3rd pensylvania ran for their lives, many men left their weapons. the regiment ceased to be as a fighting force, had they only held on for a little while they would have seen the 71st retreating…
O'hara tried to rally the highlanders but they refused to comply, he took a few names and sent them to the provost, under order to take any man not doing his duty under arrest,

Round 5.
Seeing the continentals feeing made the 23rd hot blooded and they charged again, they volley from the contientals were even more ineffective then last time, again the americans got cut down and ran, this time from the field, Wallece bearly got a hold of the 23rd and stoped them, or they would have chased they 2nd new york to broklyn.

Seeing this the 1st new york milita ran for the hills, the 33rd turned and marched for the flank of the 2nd new york militia,

the von bose regiment could not take the volume of fire any more and retreated.
But by this time washington gave word for what was left of the army to retreat.

In the end the british lost 502 men, killed wounded or missing/captured while the american lost over 1100, mostly missing but also a big number killed or wounded.

It was a fun simulation, but it can't realy be a true test untill I get some figs on the table.

YAY, someone replied, I was afraid I had spent 20 minutes wrieing this and nobody would read it.

It was great fun, I have to tweek some stats to make it give it even more AWI feel, I don't want to make the milita total useless so I'll let them stay, and simply make the british a bit more hardcore, I feel that for it to be a propper AWI battle, the Americans need at least twice the number of militia units as the british have regulars to have a chance to actualy win.

I want to make a battle were both sides got a good chance at winning while still keeping the spirit of the AWI.

Which is lots of american milita trying to stop the british juggernaught. well placed americans is the key to win the battle, as once the british starts their attack, you'll have more then eought to do, with out trying fancy tactical movments

I've played Carnage and Glory at cons and loved them.

I started with Eaglebearer computer rules many years ago. i have owned several sets and played in a Carnage and Glory 1 game years ago at Historicon. I had fun and enjoyed the rules. I liked your AAR too.

We play a lot of C&GII and they are still one of my favourite rules sets.

You should join the C&G Yahoo group if you haven't already, there are a number of errata sheets that clear up a few of the grey areas in the rules.

I used C&G for an online 1866 Austro-Prussian campaign. Pasted campaign and battle maps into PowerPoint to send back and forth to the players. Made the inf/art/cav symbols in ppt as well. The OBs were constructed in C&G and I would fight the battles on my notebook using the PPT maps and units as my tabletop.

During battles I would give updates at half hourly intervals or less or more depending on the players proximity to the action. C&G was perfect for this.

Everything about this experience was profoundly fascinating and enjoyable. The lack of all knowing intelligence, the delays in communication, the interaction between players some of which became rather heated, were very memorable. And everything unfolded in a realistic manner for that time period.

So from my stand point…C&G II…THUMBS UP!
