I would like to ask my parents for a book on Napoleonic Uniforms for Christmas, and was wondering what people suggest in the ~£10 to ~£15 range?

NoLongerAMember21 Nov 2009 5:23 a.m. PST

What kind of book, general, specific, any particular armies or theatre?

Constantine21 Nov 2009 5:23 a.m. PST

Something from Osprey?

I'd quite like something as general as possible, although something with more of a focus on the French and British (I'm painting Victrix) would still be okay. As it's for painting I'd prefer a broad overview of many nations and units than something that spends too long focussing on specifics of lace, buttons etc that I wouldn't be able to capture exactly anyway.

Haythornthwaite, P
Uniforms of the Peninsular War 1807-14 Weidenfeld & Nicolson

Windrow, M & Embleton, G
1997
Military Dress of the Peninsular War 1808-14 Crowood Press
1859150446

I would recommend these two under the criteria you have outlined.

However they might need to look on Ebay or abebooks for them, or see if the likes of Caliver etc have them.

If the festive budget can be stretched a bit, C E Franklin's guide to British Napoleonic Uniforms is a great book and Amazon have got it knocked down to £24.50 GBP from forty quid.

What makes everyone assume this guy is interested in the British?

Jaycor21 Nov 2009 11:14 a.m. PST

Hi
I would second FreddBlogs suggestions above but you may have trouble finding them. I started off with Ospreys Men-at-Arms series and although they have their critics I still believe they are a good place to start.

Regards and happy painting

Gav

PS Widowson, because he says so.

Digby Smith's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars is a general work with lots of illustrations and should fit the bill. It's available for under £15.00 GBP from Amazon:

Widowson, he is painting Victrix French and British.

I ordered Digby Smith's book to add to my collection but returned it because although it had many color illustrations of uniforms, it tended to show very obscure uniforms rather than a more mainstream ones.

Hazkal, I've got a copy of the Haythornthwaite / Chappell "Uniforms of the Peninsular Wars 1807 – 1814". It's yours for the price of the postage if you want it. If so you can contact me through my blog.
