Just finished watching this. I didn't realise it was based on the RPG till I looked in upon Wikipedia. Its pretty bad but you might like it if you want some steam punk or post apocalypse fluff or inspiration.

Strangely it has an interesting cast including John Malkovich, Ron Pearlman and Sean Pertwee.

BTW it was better than Mega-Shark vs Giant Octopus!! Who would have thought?

Warwick1319 Nov 2009 11:24 p.m. PST

I didn't hate it. Some of the visuals were really cool. The actors are all top-notch, which is really weird for such an otherwise goofy movie.

"Based" in a rather loose sense, yes.
Its better than a lot of recent Syfy fare because it was made with a real movie budget as a real movie. Not a big enough budget, mind you, but bigger than TV normally gets.

wolvermonkey19 Nov 2009 11:36 p.m. PST

Still waiting for mine from my comic shop. Actually I'm waiting for 4 DVDs that are all out now. Frell.

This movie hit so many production snags I am surprised it was ever finished.

If you look it up, you can find that the movie earned around $4,500 USD in total movie theater ticket sales… I am not sure how that works for a straight to DVD/SyFy channel film.

It apparently had a budget of $22 USD million!!

I hope the producers were in it for the tax loss!
I thought it was a bit weird to give a group of elite soldiers unfamiliar weapons(swords) to go on a suicide mission to save humanity.

They gave them swords since that was the most effective weapon against the DarK Legion. It isn't a great film. It may not even be a good film. But, I think it's decent. The actors are pretty good. Much better than normal B-movie types. Strangely, I find the story full of atmosphere. I think some of the parts are pretty cool. Especially the start of the movie. I wasn't real thrilled with how they twisted the Dark Legion, though.

I AM an unabashed fan of the Warzone universe. Perhaps that's part of it.

Thanks,

John

Yeah, I'm a big Mutant Chronicles / Warzone fan too. Found the movie not the worst thing in the world, but certainly could have been better.

I thought the Dark Legion thing was totally off however. Ironically, they rReminded more of the Koralon Araktons from Void 1.1, which is what the Warzone game morphed into when Target went under and the employees started their own company.

It seems the MC property is just cursed, everyone that touches it ends in failure.

kreoseus220 Nov 2009 7:33 a.m. PST

Nice to see a movie where they spoke Irish ! Thought the lighting in the film a bit weird though.

Prince August seem to be doing okay by it. I only watched to film to give me something to paint my plastic Bauhaus by.

The best part is the battlescene between Capitol and Bauhaus at the beginning.

CmdrKiley20 Nov 2009 9:38 a.m. PST

I have to agree. After the beginning battle things just sort of spiraled out of control.

I did like the machine that made necromutants. That seemed very Dark Legion.

I thought the whole premise that these things were sealed underground for thousands of years. And yet the Doomtroopers are able to sneak their way in through an abandoned elevator shaft?

Slagneb20 Nov 2009 9:51 a.m. PST

Wow, some of you guys are being too kind to this movie. I purchased it from Best Buy the week it went on sale hoping for just an ok film with good visuals. Boy was I disappointed…anyone want my copy? I'll never watch it again.

I still haven't got past the opening 13.5 minutes, but I've read the novelization; not bad, once you get past the WW1 gear, Lewis MG's as rifles, and VERY Bauhaus Minis looking APC's/tanks(thankfully), not a bad story… Was it EVER shown in US theaters, though?

CmdrKiley20 Nov 2009 11:12 a.m. PST

Didn't that Paris Hilton movie, The Hottie & The Nottie, make more than that? Ouch that's pretty bad.

However, I think I'd still rather see Mutant Chronicles.

Farstar20 Nov 2009 11:22 a.m. PST

Its theatrical release was all European, I think. If there was a US theatrical release it was done on very few screens and without fanfare. I mean really, 400 people total?

Delthos20 Nov 2009 12:15 p.m. PST

Prince August is doing well by it because they aren't trying to produce new stuff for the line. They are just selling off old stock that they picked up.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP20 Nov 2009 5:07 p.m. PST

Yeah, the opening combat scenes are pretty good. I don't think the movie never was in theaters in the US. Strangely, it was on the scifi channel before its Dvd release. It's on Netflix'a watch it now list so I can watch it anytime.

Thanks,

John

hedeby20 Nov 2009 7:11 p.m. PST

It was actually shown at the Cannes Film Festival. According to the wire story in the local paper, it was kind of 'laughed' out of the festival. Too bad too. I like the old Warzone mini's game.

Dropzonetoe Fezian20 Nov 2009 9:21 p.m. PST

I loved the film… Of course I love bad sci-fi movies so take that with a grain of salt.

I didn't go into it thinking it would make any sense… stuff got blew up, some things rocked, interesting bits here and there and there you go… the ending on the flaming spinning thing was silly though.

The tech did seem to 'feel' right though. This all happened pre-Dark Eden too.

richarDISNEY23 Nov 2009 10:31 a.m. PST

I really liked it til the last 15 min… Then it gets really lame…

retzlaffmd01 Dec 2009 11:06 a.m. PST

problem is, it takes place ON "Dark Eden"…

Not sure what you mean? The Corps are starting to leave Earth in this movie. It would be before Earth became DE.
