Predread fans…. Old Glory has a new bevy of coal burners – they've filled somewhat out the US and Spanish lines and added a few other odd ships as well. Here are two of the new ones:

USS Brooklyn picture
Japanese Naniwa picture

Both of these are built stock, save the rigging. Note that Naniwa has fittings for both Sino-Japanese war (10" guns) and Russo-Japanese war (6" guns on the centerline)

Wow! I had no idea. 1/600 is pretty big size for gaming though.

Oh very nice! I have been wondering when OG would release the Spanish ships. Make me glad I just renewed my OG Army membership. Rob.

Yeah.. but there is just something about the heft of such a thing. Very pleasing to the senses. And I am no longer young. Pushing a 1/2400 around on a tabletop gets less and less appealing, and these are big enough that I can stoup when they are on the floor.

Right now I am trying for a "Pacific Jutland" circa 1908 – US and Japanese. Also fleshing out Yellow Sea 1904-5.

Wasnt the range that ships fired at shorter in this time period?

Yes, but mostly for lack of director control and decent sights rather than because of the range of the guns themselves. The Russo-Japanese war was not long past the era when guns were aimed and fired by individual gun layers, rather than through some centralized intelligence.

I distort my firing ranges for all my naval gaming anyway --it is a game after all. I use our 1/300 sailing ships with a home spun set of rules I call "souped up broadsides". Its a blast and I didn't have to attend the naval academy.

VSB – in "The Fleet that had to die" the author said the Russian Baltic Fleet was installing its directors on the way to Tsushima. So, RJW had to be the first test of director controlled gunfire.

And nice paint work on the ships. If only 1/600 wasn't so expensive! Ah, maybe the Nigerian Oil Ministry will start sending the fortune they promised!

Actually, with the army card, these ships are about the same price as many of the smaller scale ships.

Cant beat the OG Army if you are planning to buy these ships. Half a dozen and you break even, after that you start saving money. I'm planning to use these ships with the Naval Thunder rules for a convention game this Spring.

Right… that's what I meant by "not long past…."

Thanks for the comments!

As I see it, $9 USD – $12 USD bucks a pop for OG is competitive with GHQ 1/2400 and definitely better than circa $35-60 per pop for 1/1250, and $45-100 per pop for 1/700 resin!

Schogun20 Nov 2009 9:48 a.m. PST

Prices are quite reasonable, doubly so with the OG Army 40% discount!

Size-wise, using two Tsushima ships as an example:

Suvarov = 367 ft long = almost 8 inches
Mikasa = 432 fit long = 8.64 inches

Guess I'll be playing on the floor. ;-)

These ships ARE awesome! I want to do Yellow Seas and Span-Am. Just so much cool stuff available from Old Glory.

Thanks,

John
