I'm half way through painting the Austrian Hesse-Homburg Hussars and I was wondering if the bugler should have the same colour Pelisse and jacket as the rest of the regiment? regards Max |

Austrian hussar trumpeters wore the same uniform as the other rank and file. Their only distinguishing mark was that their shako plume was red as for kaporals. And a grey horse if possible. |

Sources I have (Rawkins & Knotel) suggest that the musicians reversed the colours between pelisse and breeches, so for Husaren Regiments 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 10 and 11 there would, indeed, be no difference between the musicians and the rank and file. But for Hessen-Homburg the pelisse would be poppy red and the breeches parrot green (although on active service the breeches would normally be concealed beneath overall trousers). |

No doubt someone will be able to give more accurate details, but I think there was also something to do with the colour and composition of braid/lace as well? R le D (unreconstructed Bonapartist) |
