I'm working on the English translation of a miniature manufacturer's newsletter. There's a short article about P40 Italian tanks being used as "dug-in pillboxes". basically, the tanks had no engines and the German used them as dug-in blockhouses. How would you call that in English? "dug in pillboxes" or "entrenched pillboxes" is what comes to my mind, but I'm sure someone who knows WWII and the English language better than I do will come up with the right words.. thanks!

I would go with something like …"used as immobile, entrenched pillboxes…" or possibly … "used as immobile, entrenched strongpoints…"

Wikipedia uses "static strongpoints":

I like the simplicity of the phrase "used as dug-in pillboxes" except it is a bit redundant – are there not-dug-in pillboxes?.

"dug in and used as pillboxes" indicates both the employment and the digging.

"P40 tanks without engines were used as pillboxes."

That's all you need.

If there put into pits or dugouts to protect the hull, you might say:

"P40 tanks without engines were dug-in as pillboxes."

The germans called them pantherturms, or at least that term was applied to a variety of dug in turrets or whole tanks.

The best narrative is emplaced strong point I think.

"panzerturms", perhaps?

Mobius18 Nov 2009 6:18 p.m. PST

"pizzaturms"
