Hi gang, Many of my playing buddies own British or American troops. I wonder whether any Romanian or Hungarian ever fought them. Trying to find unusual opponents for them

i don't think so. ie i be utterly amazed if they did. you could try Vichy French. Germans come in so many flavors why not them? i've seen a really smart Luftwaffe inf company for FoW. |
| Cardinal Hawkwood | 18 Nov 2009 5:13 a.m. PST |
you could get them to fight each other |

.Vichy French is my other option, but there's a lack of 10mm minis for the those(well Levant and North Africa at least) .Fighting each other wouldn't help as i would have to provide both side :) I should make clear that i don't own either right now, i'm just trying to find the next army to paint apart from my incoming finns^^^. |

Your Romanians could always fight Soviets
what about Bulgarians? And your Hungarians could whip up on some Slovakians (1938-41)or Czechoslovakians (1939). They assisted Germany in Yugoslavia and declared war on the Soviets in 1941. |

Why not do Italians. They fought the British and Americans
and the Soviets. And there is plenty available in 10mm |

Hungarians did fight US troops. I cannot remember the particulars, but I do remember them being confused at first with Germans. that is understandable due to the similar helmet. Larry |

Yes, the Hungarians fought the British – a Hungarian regimental group fought alongside the German Marine Divisions near Hanover in 1945. The 53rd (Welsh) Division found them to be tough opponents. |

The Rumanians main opponents are Soviets, followed by Hungarians & Germans! Given half a chance they'd have fought the Hungarians in 1941 as well
If you want to fight the allies, a better bet would be Hungarians, as above. |

Romania's war in short: 1/ Lose parts of the country to the Soviet Union (no fighting) 2/ Have a fascist coup and join the axis 3/ Join the Operation Barbarossa and send lots of troops into Soviet (And 3.1/ Be bombed rather thoroughly by the US/British) 4/ Get trashed back to Romania 5/ Have royalist countercoup, join the allies, and be invaded by the soviet union, in that slightly curious order 6/ Fight Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia (including german troops in those countries) So, the eligeble historical opponents are: 1941-44 Soviet Forces (with extra german stuff) 1942-44 (I think) US and British air forces (no land battles) 1944-45 Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, (with a deal of Soviet material and tanks) |

Yes Italians is the best multi purpose/theater army, even fought German as the "Co-belligerent Army" :) Edit: Argh, was responding to Chris Palmer and now ten more replies arrived, cool :p Thanks for all the replies guys, didn't know that Hungarians fought Brits and maybe US troops, interesting. |

There was no Czechoslovakia in 1944 you may mean Slovakia who have an interesting history in 1944-45 link While the Slovak government soldiered on into 1945 their army was effectively gone after this. |
| Deserter | 18 Nov 2009 9:39 a.m. PST |
The Hungarians fought the Slovak in 1939 link |

I'd add that this was by no means common. The battle between Welsh and Hungarian units in 1945 is the only instance I've ever come across for Hungarians fighting on the Western Front. |

I thought I read one report that in 1945 Hungarian units with Pnzr IVs fought some German units. |

I'd forgotten that little war, Deserter. It could be a fun war to refight – you could almost get it all in on one table! |

Rudy – during the Battle of Budapest there were some clashes, although the Hungarian forces generally seemed to simply 'ignore' the Germans rather than fight them at that point. The Germans themselves having rather a lot of Russians to contend with.
The German coup that toppled Horthy in 1944 could also have descended into combat rather quickly. |
| Aurelian | 18 Nov 2009 2:29 p.m. PST |
The German coup that toppled Horthy -did- descend into combat. There was a firefight outside the Regent's Palace, and there was a battle on the Lion's Brigade, where Hungarian cavalry attempted to halt the advancing German Army
The Honved only laid down its arms when Horthy ordered them to. -A. |
