Looking for buildings for Song of Splintered Land Kobolds. Also looking for Kobold swamp ideas.

Depends on what you think Kobold houses look like…
I always pictured Kobolds as living underground in their mines. The few that live above ground I'd picture as living in mounds of rock, like Fred Flintstone.

Swamp? Since they are (by default, at least) not aquatic, you'd be looking at above-ground dwelling. I'm thinking an old huge and rotted out tree with lots of broken off branches showing hollow. Lots of exits.

Alternately hide huts, like the Barbarian Huts done in Resin by Grendel.

You *could* do Bayou Kobolds, with the shack on stilts, tilted back chair near the door, and gators as guard animals…

D&D had them as dog like creatures til what? 3rd edition, and then they became reptilian, drogonoids? I always saw them as cave dwellers with filthy nests ..more primitive than goblins.

"D&D had them as dog like creatures…"

Not in 1st Edition AD&D or prior. Their voices are described as "high pitched dog-like yipping" in 1e, but all art and every licensed miniature shows horns and scales.

Everquest went for the dog-people look, with obvious fur and no horns, probably keying off the same mistakenly remembered descriptions all the other dog lovers insist on.

There is a creeping internet meme that identifies Kobolds as anthropomorphic Pangolin, but that's a reaction to the draconic thing of 3e and 4e. The personalities are a reasonable match, though.

Playing the kobold revolt from SONG OF THE SPLINTERED LANDS?

Acheson has some buildings that might work -- including some made from giant vegetables, etc.

Check Acheson Creations. The McBrides have a lot of those -- there's some nice ones not yet pictured. I think the Splintered Light kobolds will fit, and look good, in some of the huts and pumpkin houses and such. Mushrooms. There' a man-eating plant the kobolds might have near a gate as an extra protection. Ours are not painted yet, but we will use them for the Druid's Children, and I think they'll work for swamp-dwelling kobolds.

David picked up some nice swamp pieces from Battlefield Terrain Concepts.

Splintered Light also has four 15mm buildings, two Dark Ages and two fantasy (pumpkins and leafy with giant nuts). They fit in with some of the Acheson things.

You might also look into 1:72 plastic sets of early American Indians -- Jamestown, etc. I think they have some huts, and campfire, etc, that would not be too far over-scale.

Not my stuff but I remembered seeing these the other day on Terrain Thralls.

Thanks, Ron; good useful how-to-do-it.

That Orc Clan Houz is pretty cool, and fits with my view of kobolds. 15mm might work well with kobolds, most of them are pretty short.

You could also take a look at some of the Grendel resin boxed sets:

jp2 – outstanding. Found these late last night. Anyone in U.S. sell them?

doc mcb18 Nov 2009 6:37 a.m. PST

I've seen them here and there in US stores. The War Room in Atlanta had them -- it's closed now, of course.

doc mcb18 Nov 2009 6:58 a.m. PST

I think some of the Acheson pieces have a similar look or feel to the Grendel ones -- which are indeed very nice.

ajbartman18 Nov 2009 8:12 a.m. PST

doc,

Are the Acheson Fantasy stuff 15 or 25mm? I did see the Celtic stuff and a few other items that would work. Yeah, to bad about the War Room.

doc mcb18 Nov 2009 9:46 a.m. PST

David brought back some Acheson pieces from Fall-In. I think they may be new, not yet on the website.

There are three round huts, each of whose door is under 20mm -- 16 to 18mm. One is stone, one is timber framing dirtdaub, and one is stone base and dirtdaub on top. Roofs are cones, bark shingles. These seem to me to be perfect for the kobolds.

There's also a larger piece, round timber house with a small projection of timber stockade attached. Its door is also 18mm or so.

There's a piece (labeled FAS 30) that is a giant gourd, about 5' tall with roof piece on. Its door is larger, but under 30mm; I don't think the kobolds would look too tiny with it. And I think swamp dwellers OUGHT to live in giant vegetables!

ajbartman18 Nov 2009 12:04 p.m. PST

I didn't see anything labeled FAS30. I did find some good looking JR miniatures pieces at the Warstore.

doc mcb18 Nov 2009 12:14 p.m. PST

I think it's new.
