I have no idea how it started, or even if they are related events, but I've now seen at least THREE documented uses of the type of headgear known as a "Fez" within the wargaming community.

First instance: Our very own Moderator, who uses a Blue Fez TMP link as his icon, which has turned the term "Blue Fez" into something with its own meaning on this board.

Second instance: The little club I "belong" to, which uses a kind of silly cartoon of a man with a Green Fez adorned with the acronyn "NOVAG" on its front (Yahoo Group site): link

Third instance: G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T creators wearing a more traditional Red Fez in a photo taken for an interview with Table Top Titans: link

Concidence? Or Conspiracy? You tell me…

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER17 Nov 2009 11:56 a.m. PST

Probably both IMHO. Then, I'm just that way.

Henrix17 Nov 2009 12:08 p.m. PST

It's very stylish.

It's also, with a smoking jacket, perfect for the gentleman relaxing himself, after a hard day at the battlefield.
In mufti, as it were.

Could be a "baldness thing" …

CPBelt17 Nov 2009 12:25 p.m. PST

No, we wear pith helmets to cover our bald spot. Read the manual.

I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a fez. A tricorn yes, but not a fez.

aercdr17 Nov 2009 1:07 p.m. PST

The Masonic George Washington Memorial in Alexandria, VA has a Fez Museum.

Sundance17 Nov 2009 1:16 p.m. PST

Some kind of secret society stuff going on here, but I'm not part of the secret…

In the last generation especially, the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine were a fixture most every American community, and looked up to for their good works (and also the subject of jokes, because of their "lighter" side of Freemasonry).

Membership has been dropping off in recent years, and the Shriners hospitals are not receiving the financial suppor they used to, but the humorous aspect still continues, I suppose.

I have both a red fez and a white one.

Just what you need when settled down in front of the fire with a nice glass of whisky watching TV. My wife despairs.

I think that the Sons of the desert was a send up of the Shriners, one of many fraternal organisations that sprang up after WW1 The Fez seemed to be popular!

The Internet is your friend! Have to love the name of this site: fez-o-rama.com

The "Fnord Conspiracy", involving Fezes and pointy-headed wargamers. Sounds like an awsome start to a novel…

I couldn't help noticing that 90% or more of those pictured have passed on, which is quite indicative of what Allen says above.

Who joins the Shriners, the Moose Lodge, the Lions or the Elks clubs, or the Knights of Columbus any more? They make miniature wargamers look like Spring Chickens by comparison!

tuscaloosa19 Nov 2009 11:19 a.m. PST

Ahem, first degree KofC here, and I welcome you to stop by your local Catholic Church to find out more (don't ask about the secret handshake though, or I'll have to kill you).

Anyhow, this would be time for a general discourse on the internet having replaced gentlemen's social clubs, and the general lack of volunteerism in the modern generation, not to mention the futility of silly clothing accessories as a bonding mechanism for post-paternal boys at heart. But I won't go there.

aecurtis Fezian19 Nov 2009 11:23 a.m. PST

In the US, the Knights Templar (York Rite Masons) looked so good in their nineteenth-century naval uniforms and feathered chapeaux, and were so popular, that somebody just *had* to copy them!

Allen

firstvarty197919 Nov 2009 1:10 p.m. PST

Well, an organization really isn't worth joining if they don't have a good hat now, is it?

That's really what's behind all the problems with HMGS-E: no official headwear!

DJCoaltrain19 Nov 2009 7:17 p.m. PST

Society of Daisy.

The red Fez is its official head gear.

It's a yahoo group of folks that like the whimsical side of miniature gaming.

DJCoaltrain19 Nov 2009 7:18 p.m. PST

Yes, I do have a red Fez.

Somewhere, in the dim misty recesses of time, say, back around 2002 or so, the NOVAG fez became an item of discussion, first as a joke (I would wear a leopard spotted one working the desk for NOVAGcons) then as a fairly serious idea. I think it post-dates our first green shirt order by about half a year. From message traffic, it would appear Donald put the order in sometime around August of 2003-- about ten (maybe) NOVAGii of those days got one, myself included. I can take credit for "Lounge Larry", or other logo.. it was too good to pass up. I don't recall exactly how the fez embedded itself in our collective consciousness, but I'm glad it did.
