Does anyone know if there are any plans to publish a Warmaster version for the horse & musket period?

Reading the review of Black Powder in WI, it's not far off! Seems the movement and command is taken from Warmaster.

There's already a unofficial Napoleonic version called NapMaster. Not surew where to find it though.

The Ambler Gamers have been using a system which I'm told is based on the Warmaster game. We have versions for all sorts of Horse and Musket era games. The rules are free for download at the Ambler Gamers Yahoo site.

Like they didn't mess up ancients bad enough?

Actually the ancients rules are good.

Have a look at Black Powder Commander PDF link

It's sort of Biblical. Warmaster begat Warmammer Historical which begat Blitzkrieg Commander which begat Black Powder Commander.

Seems fairly "professionally" put together

Or try Napoleons Legacy. A little closer to Blitzkrieg Commander than Warmaster, but sounds about what you are looking for. Rules and army lists from early 1800s through to ACW.

There was a variant published in Wargames Illustrated a couple of years ago, too, although I dont recall the issue numbers.

I really think that they have done it with the Black Powder rules. It is a version of the rules more or less and designed for the period you are looking at. It could just as easily be done with 10 mm figs as 28s.

Thanks for the replies. All good suggestions that I will check into.

I should have said I came across the Black Powder Commander rules via the Free Wargames Rules site.

We ran a Nap WM variant in Wargames Journal … probably still on the site somewhere … Black Powder has been described by my club members as a shooty WM without the annoying bits … if that is any help. Personally I think it shares the heritage but it isn't WM … being a big WM fan/player though I have to say I feel at home (even if I keep trying to add a die when charging instead of hitting on 3s !)

Napoleons Legacy was inspired by the Warmaster series including Blitzkreig Commander. The key to the game is easy use of formations and no absolute 'you must' over scale or basing. Combat comes in two varieties as well to give a better flavour of the advances to attack used throughout the period 1800 to 1865. Enjoy.

Forgot to add … we are playing BP in 10mm using cm instead of inches.

bavoisSYW21 Nov 2009 2:59 a.m. PST

Yep! Agree, if you are looking for warmaster historical, then just buy black powder and halve the scale or play in cm's if not playing in 28mm! I like warmaster and I think BP is great for Colonials or ACW or Emerging empires battles but I will go for Koenig Krieg for my own preference when it comes to Horse and Musket. :)

Warmaster fantasy battles – the best fantasy game ever, especially around 2000points….

Saw BP being played as Napoleonics at Warfare 2009, appeared to be working very well in 15mm with around 30 units a side.

You might want to take a look at the 'Two For Tea' rules. They're available from Free Wargames Rules(direct link to .pdf PDF link ) They were written for the AWI but shouldn't be that difficult to convert for other 18th century wars.

Trajanus,

I saw the same game today; it appeared to be flowing well and the two chaps playing it seemed to be working only from the playsheet. However, some of the outcomes of the rules mechanisms seemed distinctly unhistorical.

Trajanus22 Nov 2009 5:16 p.m. PST

colinjallen,

Didn't notice that yesterday. Care to explain what you thought was "distinctly unhistorical" and why?
