I'm putting some Star Trek Starmada games together and would like some input. They'll be dealing with the Klingon invasion of Cardassia. In the DS:9 episode "Soldiers of the Empire", a Klingon officer told what it was like to fight the Cardassians. He said, "With them nothing was as it seemed. It was always a plan within a plan leading to a trap. It was an honor to kill them!" Klingon game viewpoint: The Klingon invasion of Cardassia is going well. The Klingons are attacking everywhere and the Cardassians are back on their heels, struggling to put an effective reaction together. A Klingon force operating near Goralis learns from intercepted Cardassian messages that a small but important convoy will be leaving the system. The escort of a Galor and 4 Hideki is very strong, which means the cargo must be vital. The Klingons place 3 K'Tingas ahead of the convoy, the plan being for them to block the path and force the escorts to move ahead and engage. Once that happens a cloaked Vor'Cha and 4 Brels will take the cargo ships in the flank, destroying them in one pass before attacking the escorts from the rear. Trapped between 2 forces the Cardassians will be wiped out, bringing glory to the Empire! What the Klingons don't know is that the Cardassians have set a trap. They need to give the Klingons a bloody nose to slow their momentum and give them reason to question each attack they're about to make. If successful it should give the Cardassians the breathing room they need to regroup. The important convoy's data was intentionally leaked and the 3 transports are actually 2 more Galors and a cargo ship loaded with enough electronics to make the extra Galors appear as freighters to the Klingons just long enough to get into weapons range. From there they hope to have a good chance of taking down the Vor'Cha. I'll swap the minis out when they open fire. So, how does it look? Have I missed anything or overthought it? Thanks! I should add the points, eh? (3) K'Tingas are 176 each (1) Vor'cha, 334 (4) Brels 34 each (3) Galor 259 each (4) Hideki 49 each Klingon total: 998 Cardassian total: 973 |

Looks like a pretty cool scenario. Which Starmada set are you using? What Trek variant? I have a load of Trek ships and am a HUGE Starmada fan. I would love to see what you are using. Thanks, John |

Nicely Trekkie construct! The only thing I might add is an interfering Starfleet busybody, trying to stop the Klingons from being trounced, but at the same time, eager to prevent a massacre of the dishonorable (read: tactically capable) Cardies. Love to hear how the fight turns out. Hope you'll post a batrep after. |

Great idea for a scenario! Please let us know how it played. |

Perhaps to simulate the Cardassian's craftiness. Each turn, after the movement has been plotted but before the movement has been revealed. Both players roll a d6. If the Cardassian rolls higher than the Klingon player, he gets to look at a number of the Klingon ships movement plots based on the difference between the die rolls. He then can re-plot his movement accordingly. |

Another idea is to give the Cardassians some bogus ships, as sensor ghosts. Deploy some extra Galor cruisers, the Cardassian player must keep track of which ones are real and which are ghosts. Perhaps a marker flipped upside down placed below each ship. The ghosts move as normal but cannot fire or launch fighters and when an enemy ship gets near enough to perform a sensor scan, or shoots at a ghost, reveal the marker to show it's true identity. This way the Cardassian player can 'set traps' by placing ghost ships in vulnerable positions for the Klingons to pounce on or waste shots on and thus spring the trap with the real ships. |

Cardassians were very good spies and intelligence gatherers. They were also very good at infiltration and sabotage. Whether having sabotouers onboard or just knowing the shield modulation frequencies (I mean Worf seemed to know them by heart) the Cardassians can cause malfunctions on the Klingon ships at the right opportunity. Once per turn, during the movement plotting phase the Cardassian player may secretly select a ship and a system on board that ship (a specific weapon, sheilds, or engines). He writes it down on a card and keeps it hidden until that ship uses that system. When the card is revealed the Cardassian player rolls a d6 to see if the attempt was successful. Depending on the system selected the results of success vary: Weapon System 1-3 Engines 1-2 Shields 1 If successful, the Klingon player cannot use that system. Weapon system simply doesn't fire that turn, ship may not move it's course, or shields do not work for that turn. |

Thanks, gents. It looks like I'm on the right track. John, the rules are Starmada X Brigade. Jay Waschak did a number of ships for both the Klingon invasion of Cardassia and the Federation-Cardassian War. Tyrel Lohr gave some good input at the end to bring the Cardies more in line, which was good because both Jay and I are big Cardassian fans and the objective view was needed. We ended up with 2 versions of the Galor. The Type 1 at 229 points covers the early version the Feds would have faced, while the Type 3 is the later upgraded version we see more of in the shows. Speaking of all this, would the Keldon have been available to face the Klingons? I know the Obsidian Order built them to attack the Founders, but did Central Command get and use the plans afterward? |

Do the old, "suck them in to the middle of the board and hit them on the flanks with reenforcements" trick. Make the reenforcement Romulan cloaked ships. What ever that secret organization was in the Romulan fleet had their own ships and stuff. Edit Obsidian Order thats them. |

Obsidian Order thats them. Arent the Romulan "Secret Police" the Tal Shiar? |

Yep. They and the Cardassian Obsidian Order were slaughtered during the attack on the Founders. Not many of either left when the Klingons attacked. |
