any suggestions for a set of rules for Modern 6mm, using forces that are not to large to handle in a game

Dirtside II?

I recommend "Cold War Commander" Fast playing, lots of fun. Dirtside II would work as well, but has more detail and less forces on table because of it (Still love DSII tho)

Fistful of Tows is also very good.

Current edition is 2nd Edition, but 3rd Edition is scheduled to come out in 2010.

2nd vote for Cold War Commander.

Arrigo16 Nov 2009 4:23 p.m. PST

3rd vote for Cold War Commander

The Lost Soul16 Nov 2009 4:36 p.m. PST

At the risk of jumping on the bandwagon, 4th vote for Cold War Commander. Fun, high manoeuvre games.

I would recommend ether modern spearhead or a Fistful of Tows.

I play both FFT2 and CWC. I really thinks it depends on what you want from your games. CWC is a bit more abstracted when it comes to units capabilities than FFT2 is. But I personally believe that CWC handles Infantry a little better than FFT2. Both are good, fun games that will give you relatively accurate results (well for a game).

CWC abstracts the way units are knocked out a lot more then FFT2. This was (is) of the hardest things for me to accept about CWC (or any xWC title for that matter, as I play all three).

If you know some one with a copy of any of the x-War Commander books, I'd suggest you borrow one and read up, or even better go watch/play in a game.

As for FFT2 you can download a free (lite) version to get a better understanding of it.

As a last note I'll say FFT2 (FFT3 is supposedly changing this) is really more of a Micro Armor games, where as CWC is a combined arms games.

You can also look at it in terms of price:
Cold War Commander = £17.50/US$48
FFT2 = US$30
Modern Spearhead = US24.50

As with all rules queries, what level of game are you interested in and what period?

Skirmish? tactical? operational?

CWC, MSH and FFoT all cover similar ground – brigade(ish) actions with one base = 1 platoon, generally armour heavy actions (AiW, Cold War etc). This may be what you are after or it may not.

Most modern warfare these days is company level counter insurgency ops, which 6mm also works well for.
