I kinda think I liked this. Definitely a new take (Number 2, or just "2" in this version, has a wife and child?), but with enough of the tried-and-true cliches to be fun. Rover is bigger than ever, and still roars.

Be seeing you.

PER TMP COMPLIANCE STANDARDS: So how would you game this in miniature?

PER TMP COMPLIANCE STANDARDS: So how would you game this in miniature?

Brightly colored doll houses and ping pong balls.

aecurtis Fezian16 Nov 2009 11:56 a.m. PST

I fell asleep…

Undead Sock Puppet16 Nov 2009 11:57 a.m. PST

BTW, I always thought that, if Rover was chasing me, well, I'd probably just run through a narrow alley…

nazrat16 Nov 2009 12:28 p.m. PST

Or a cactus patch!

Schogun16 Nov 2009 12:42 p.m. PST

I'm watching it because I'm a big fan of the original. I understand it's a "re-interpretation," so I'm not being hypercritical.

The mystery is there, but the intrigue is not. I'm missing the surreal wonder of it all.

The Village is much bigger than the original!

Top Gun Ace16 Nov 2009 12:47 p.m. PST

I watched it too.

It was okay.

At least I got to see it from the beginning, so have a bit more of a framework to understand it from.

Brief impressions from an episode, or two of the old one, many eons ago, also help.

I love the giant, bouncing ball…..

The new, spartan take on the village is interesting. Appears to be in North Africa, if I am not mistaken.

I much prefer the older, more ornate village, instead.

Of course, Patrick McGoohan is sorely missed.

Top Gun Ace16 Nov 2009 12:49 p.m. PST

2 has done very well for himself.

I thought the woman in bed was his daughter, since she appears so young, and that the kiss on the lips was a bit odd.

Yes, apparently the young boy is his son.

Be seeing you.

Captain Apathy16 Nov 2009 1:40 p.m. PST

I have it on DVR and will watch it tonight. I watched the 10 minute preview and was intrigued.

jeffrsonk16 Nov 2009 2:01 p.m. PST

We're two hours in, and we have absolutely no idea what Number 2 wants from Number 6. I love watching Ian McKellen's acting as much as anyone, but really?

I'm afraid this will go down as a bad idea from the first glimmer. The Prisoner was the product of Patrick McGoohan's individual personality, passion, and vision. Trying to recreate that without him was doomed to fail.

Altius16 Nov 2009 2:08 p.m. PST

I've never seen the original, and was planning to watch the new one last night. But my son came up to me and asked me to show him how to paint figures. How could I pass up that kind of opportunity?

I regretted missing the show, but had a great evening drinking hot chocolate and painting with my best buddy. Hopefully, they'll have the episodes on Hulu so I can catch it later.

:)

"We're two hours in, and we have absolutely no idea what Number 2 wants from Number 6".

Of course we do.

He wants "information". ;-)

If he doesn't know what information 6 has, how can he know what to ask for?

There-in lies the beauty of the series. You never really know what is going on, and when you begin to think you do, things get turned upside down. It permits the viewers to almost be bit characters in the show, since you may know as little as the show's participants.

By the way, what is your designation number?

Be seeing you.

Delta Vee16 Nov 2009 2:52 p.m. PST

aint seen it yet, though i am hopeful.
I am NOT a number, i am a free Pengiun. ive resigned

TwoGunBob16 Nov 2009 2:59 p.m. PST

I thought it was pretty deplorable. Six is a wishy wash goofball with no fire or glimmer of individuality. Any of the rogue's gallery of No. Two's from the original series would have this joker broke down and Roland Walter Dutton'ed before the first commercial break.

As a reimaginging it seems tailored to the MTV no-attention-span generation with plenty of quick cuts and staggered time lapses that the writers probably think add a mystique to the series.

Ian McKellen's acting felt like he was still Magneto only he borrowed his costume from either Matlock or David Bowie. Really, the show has very little visual appeal and seems determined to put all the cards on the table by the end of each episode.

As an original series it would probably be comparable to Prison Break but as a spiritual successor to The Prisoner it's just downright awful.

Captain Apathy16 Nov 2009 3:00 p.m. PST

I am not a number I am a … whatever

If your looking for true to our timeline wild west both Aces and eights and Deadlands are to be avoided, as both are alternate history games.

The Aces & Eights alternate history doesn't affect the rules at all, except for the production date (real history -10 years) of a handful of weapons.

The only comments I've ever heard about Aces & Eights is "Gee, the shot clock is really interesting" and "OMG, the rules themselves are so overly complicated, it will take an hour to work out 10 seconds of real life action"

Then you should check out the previews, too. :)

The new, spartan take on the village is interesting. Appears to be in North Africa, if I am not mistaken.

Some of the production photos on amctv.com say Namibia.

I'm a dissenter on the original having watched it back in the day in my dorm's TV lounge. I found it tedious and boring--like Seinfeld with a flat affect.

Only watched up through Dr Barbie rescuing him in the desert (sick not boredom), but I liked Ian Mckellan's take of the role. I find the scariest evil to the the pleasant, bland type. My wife suggested we wait until the entire mini-series in recorded then do a marathon.

Inquisitor Thaken16 Nov 2009 3:28 p.m. PST

I thought it had some nice, classic lines:

2: Have you ever had sex with your mother, 17?

17: No!

2: Well, don't.

Schogun16 Nov 2009 3:31 p.m. PST

Word is the show offered the role of 93 to Patrick McGoohan, but he wanted to be No. 2. They said no, he said no, so no PM.

I would have been disappointed is PM was in the new show and not still No. 6.

lugal hdan16 Nov 2009 4:42 p.m. PST

I'm hoping to watch the pilot episoe tonight. I don't have high hopes, since a number of shows in recent memory have riffed on the "neither the audience nor the main character(s) know what is happening" theme.

They'll have to get a little radical to be worth the trouble of a whole new series IMHO. But I'll certainly give the requisite "3 episodes" that I think any new series of sufficiently interesting premise deserves.

McWong7316 Nov 2009 5:19 p.m. PST

Is it a better re-imagiwhatever than the recent "V" remake?

doug redshirt16 Nov 2009 6:39 p.m. PST

I will hold all opions until the last show. But so far it is interesting. Trust no one.

Gave it about 30 minutes and lost total interest in it. Its been a very long time since I saw the original, but it had as I recollect, more of a secret agent feel to it. And I would not even think about gaming or collecting this.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP16 Nov 2009 9:44 p.m. PST

Watched the first one but have no desire to watch more. McKellan is the only interesting thing in it and he is not enough. Be seeing you!

Kilkrazy17 Nov 2009 3:04 a.m. PST

Reimagining BSG worked because they took a rather hokey kids' show and turned it into an adult oriented story.

That obviously can't work for The Prisoner.

Captain Apathy17 Nov 2009 1:15 p.m. PST

I watched the first two episodes last night and I was intrigued. I am hopefully optimistic.

I am also curious to see if they follow the same format as the original series, where in the early episodes 6 was really getting pushed around by 2 and the village. It isn't until later in the series that 6 learns how to manipulate events in his favor.

Top Gun Ace17 Nov 2009 1:25 p.m. PST

Lucy is rather interesting…..

It is apparently a very short re-make, since it supposedly concludes tonight, so appears to be about 6 hours total.

GarnhamGhast17 Nov 2009 4:22 p.m. PST

In the original series, IIRC the real thing they want to know is why he resigned.
No 6 should be a real ballsy trouble maker, always pushing and trying to escape.

Top Gun Ace18 Nov 2009 12:26 a.m. PST

I watched the whole thing, and must say, from the little I remember of the original, it left me with the impression of being much better.

Certainly edgier, and a more action packed than the remake, if I recall correctly. Of course, I haven't seen it for many decades.

Inquisitor Thaken18 Nov 2009 7:06 a.m. PST

GarnhamGhast "No 6 should be a real ballsy trouble maker, always pushing and trying to escape."

I can handle a rethink on Number 6, provided that it is a good one.

TwoGunBob18 Nov 2009 10:34 a.m. PST

No Six really was the penultimate panty waist in this remake. The characters reacted like he was some great source of independence while his actual character was the pinnacle of ignoring any trouble and letting other characters do the work for him.
A lackluster series with the high point for me being able to say at least it's over and will be soon forgotten.

Top Gun Ace18 Nov 2009 12:26 p.m. PST

I wasn't very impressed with it either.

SeattleGamer Supporting Member of TMP22 Nov 2009 8:10 p.m. PST

Being a big fan of the original I was going to pass on this miserable remake entirely. Then it turns out that Comcast On-Demand had it recorded and available for me to watch in spite of my indifference. So I gave it a shot.

-It killed six hours I'll never get back.
-It had nothing at all to do with someone who resigned, and some other entity wanting to know why.
-The village is way more like a city, they need buses and cars to get around (so it lost that intimate feeling)
-They made up for having a dull plot by constantly showing flash backs and using what I like to call the "jumble-edit" process, hoping the viewer wouldn't notice how dull and uninteresting the plot was. Sadly, I noticed.

Forget comparing this to the original. As a separate film project, all on its own, it was IMHO horrible.
