Which newer brands of mid-18th century figures (WAS, SYW, AWI), currently on the market, feature realistic human proportions: slender build with normal sized heads, hands, calves, etc. and in unexagerated poses? I am already aware of older, "classic" ranges like RSM, Tradition, Suren, Holger Eriksson, and Spencer Smith, but I'd like to know what else is available that does not suffer from the pumpkin headed, banana handed, cartoon gnome syndrome. Please include a website link with your reply if possible. Thanks in advance for your input.

Minden win hands down – superb Stadden like miniatures.

I am with Minden, as well. Eureka is a close second, but on;y have Saxons and 1740s Dutch. Both lines are highly recommended.

For early period French, the new jacdaw range from Old Glory UK is really something. Only infantry so far but more to come within weeks. Lots of figure variations and customisable with separate arms. For most others I agree with the many recommendations for Mindens. Eureka does good figures of the less well-known armies.

Further to the above, I've just posted some pix of the Jacdaw French infantry on the Old School wargames site under John's armies.

Thanks for your assistance and suggestions everyone. So far, that's Crusader, Eureka, Elite, RSM95, Minden, Trident (40mm), and Jackdaw. Are there any other newer/current lines of SYW-era figures, featuring realistic human proportions and fairly sedate, unexagerated poses? Of you think of anything, please let me know here. Thanks!

Musketier19 Nov 2009 3:05 a.m. PST

Of the above, I'm not sure that Crusader should be in the same line-up as the rest in terms of proportions. They are nice figures, and competitively priced, but definitely more "substantial" than Minden, Eureka or RSM. I had an artillery crew that matched their Foundry colleagues seamlessly (all gone now), and someone online dubbed his Crusader Austrian unit the Schwarzenegger regiment for a reason…

Note that Minden and, from their few online pictures, RSM both do Swedish cuffs only for the Prussian figures, leaving the customer to paint in cuff flaps where required.

We have a growing 40mm SYW range (British, French, Austrian and Prussian infantry at present -- artillery and cavalry to be added soon).
