Well maybe speed build is a bit of a miss title. What it is my good freind has asked me to help him get an army together so he can take part in a student wargaming thing. Hes not played 40k before (neither have i really just got access to some books). He's interested in Space Marines (which is why i asked the question about artifacer armour). But ive had a look at the 5th ed codex and its a bit well confusing for me. What army is a good allrounder to take. Money is also an issue so no forge world bits. Total points for the army im still trying to find out but i assume it will be whatever the normal ammount is. If i find out ill update. If someone can suggest a army set up id appreciate it. Thanks |

If you did nothing more than pick up the Marine components from the 40K Black Reach set – which can be found very cheaply on eBay – you would have a good, capable force to build off of. The boxed set comes with two armies – Orks and Marines plus a miniature version of the rules and dice you need to play and is a fantastic value for what is inside if you had to buy it outright. The Marines inside include: - A Captain - Dreadnought (think Mech) - 5 x Terminators (Heavily armored marines) - 10 x Marines This is well over 500 points of troops. Most people play with 1000 to 1500 points so adding maybe another 10 man Marine squad and some Assault troops with Jump packs should get you there with no problem. So scrounge eBay for Black Reach Marines, then pick up an extra set just the Tactical Squad as well. The Only boxed set you might have to buy is the Assault marines, but I would only do that if you are in to modeling and creating your own look to the figures. Otherwise, it would be cheaper to pick up already built marines from eBay. Hope it helps and be careful! I am a Marine player and 5th edition is very kind to Marines. They are a very powerful force with some great options. You can make a mistake with them and still recover. Once you start gaming with marines, it is easy to get hooked on the game! Larry |

One last thing, the nice part about going with Black Reach marines is that they are plastic, and mostly put together. At best, many just have their weapons separate for painting purposes and they are slotted to fit nicely into the marines's arm area. Quick, clean, easy. Larry |

The other nice thing about the black reach set is that it contains the orks, so if you wanted an army to game against your friend from time to time as well, you could split the costs and have one too. So for about $50-60 each you'd each have about a 1000 pt army. |

Space Marines are a good starting army. Their strengths lie in their durability and shooting powers. Most successful Vanilla Marine armies focus on a strong shooting component backed up with a counter attack force and some transports to dart out to capture and contest objectives. Here's a 1500 point list with prices from eBay I've found: Space Marine Captain ($4) Librarian ($15, or if you message me I can send you out a Librarian made out of Dark Angels robed parts for free) 4 Tactical Squads ($60 or so if you buy Black Reach figures) 10 Scouts with Close Combat Weapons ($30 or so on eBay) 2 Dreadnoughts ($24 for Black Reach) 5 Terminators ($15 for Black Reach) 1 LandSpeeder with MultiMelta + Heavy Flamer (~$20 on eBay) About $130 USD dollars or so can give you a decent army. It's not going to be the best army ever but it's going to be solid and better than a lot of armies I see people play. I play a ton of 40k and go to most of the big events and win a lot and I can tell you that a lot of people are not going to be prepared for a horde of Space Marines on foot. It's a solid list and will do well without being cheesy or against the background of the army.
Goodluck with 40k. It's a really fun game and has a good community of gamers that play it. |
