I don't know, but doesn't Vista have a compatibility wizard? I'm still on XP, but it's probably worth a search. (Basically it'll pretend to be an older version so that games designed for them can run on it – I regularly play Windows 95 games on my XP machine that way.) |

Have you tried these? link

I downloaded Steel Panthers onto my Vista laptop
sorry but I'm at work so don't have the links etc to explain where I got it from. All works fine
and there seems to be a lot more than there used to be
now called Steel Panthers: World at War I think?? I tried using Dos Box to get Age of Rifles to run on XP and Vista machines without any success. I guess that might also work but you'll need to have more technical savvy than me [admittedly not difficult!] Edit
sorry
I'm assuming you want to get Steel Panthers itself to run
you might of course be looking for a different game that's like SP
in which case I'm no help at all |

There are a couple of different versions of Steel Panthers online. Shrapnel Games has SPWW2 and SPMBT. Matrix Games has Steel Panthers World at War. |

You will find SPWW2 has a much more thorough TOE. MIKe |

SP: World at War is a fun game, just started playing a USMC campaign, but I'm running XP still so I can't help with the Vista issue, sorry

AlisterJ, I have Age of Rifles on my laptop at home (running Vista). When I get home I will take a look at my setup to see if I can glean anything useful for you. I'll post my results here. |

Age of Rifles should work well with DOS Box. I have it running at home on a laptop running Puppy Linux. You may just need to tinker with the dosbox settings. I think all versions of Dosbox have a GUI for changing the settings. Make sure you have it. For Linux, it was a separate download. It is much easier than fooling with the configuration files. But how can you gain that "authentic" DOS gaming nostalgia without fiddling with configuration files for hours? They are inseparable, I say. One thing to keep in mind is that many of the more popular DOS games from the early 90s were re-released as Windows 95 versions. Those ones do NOT work with DOSbox. Make sure you have the DOS version or you don't have a hope in hell of getting it to work with DOSbox. I made that mistake with X-Com. |

Why would you want to play an old hex game? |
| Shardik | 16 Nov 2009 11:15 p.m. PST |
Because I liked it! Anyway, I'll try the download version of SP. But what I asked was, is there a WWII game *like* Steel Panthers. By that I mean, controlling companies of tanks, infantry and ordnance, not driving around in a single tank shooting things up |

My old version of Steel Panthers WAS a WWII game! a quick google & here you are link or link or link Note I haven't actually downloaded any of these so cavat emptor! |

"Why would you want to play an old hex game?" Because no-one has ever done a game like Age of Rifles again. It even lets you build your own uniforms. You can't even get a good tank simulator these days, where is M1 Tank Platoon for the Xbox 360? Don't get me started on what pass for combat flight simulators these days. |

controlling companies of tanks, infantry and ordnance, not driving around in a single tank shooting things up Yeah sure there is. Battlefront's Combat Mission(CM) and Matrix's Panzer Command:Kharkov (PCK). Panzer Command uses my miniature rules (Panzer War) for some aspects of the game. Currently they are working on an upgrade. Here is a look of upcoming Mcensk(Mtsensk) and Ponyri maps. picture picture |

"Why would you want to play an old hex game?" LOL. For one its free and has quite a bit of support for it on a a few sites. And for me I happen to like the "old hex" games sometimes. :) Robert |

Yes, there were three Steel Panthers games if memory serves, and only one was "modern" as opposed to WW2. The original (WW2) Steel Panthers is about as much like a WW2 Steel Panthers as you can get
. ;-) |
