Tool Bench Hardware Painters Tape

Why do wargamers need painters tape, and is the dollar-store variety good enough?

I had recently placed an order for 28mm ACW Redoubt figures. I was ordering infantry figures which I am familiar with. I wasn't familiar with Redoubt cavalry but since I also needed a few individual cavalry to add to some other manufacturers 28mm ACW cavalry I had bought on eBay to make a cavalry regiment and since I was sending an order anyway, I ordered some Redoubt cavalry too. When I got the order, opened the package and inspected the cavalry I was shocked. Holy sh…….er……cow! They were huge! I could throw a saddle over one and ride it myself.

I know the question of figure compatibility has often come up on TMP but I noticed that it is usually limited to specific manufacturers; is Dixon compatible with Essex, etc.

Is there a more comprehensive table/list that speaks to compatibility issues for all 25-28mm ACW figure manufacturers; all cross-referenced to one another?

Below is the list of current 25-28mm ACW figure manufacturers I know about.

First Corps
Old Glory
Sash and Saber
Fenlon
Redoubt
Essex
Dixon
Foundry
Perry
Renegade
Crusader
Hinchliffe

Such a cross-referenced table or list would be very helpful especially when you are considering buying a set of figures on eBay to fill out a set you already have and you are not familiar with the manufacturer mentioned on eBay.

If such a comprehensive table or list does not exist maybe we could create one. To get things started and for what it's worth, in my own 25-28mm ACW collection I find that Old Glory and Sash and Saber are compatible when mounted on the same base. I do not find Dixon mixes well with either of these on the same base. But I do find that an ACW regiment made up of exclusively Dixon figures presents an acceptable appearance with non-Dixon regiments on the playing surface if the Dixon bases are slightly thicker than the ones used with Old Glory and Sash and Saber. I have no problem mixing the stockier Redoubt infantry in the same regiment as Old Glory and Sash and Saber but only on their own Redoubt-only bases. I do not mix Redoubt on the same base as Old Glory and Sash and Saber.

Probably the best place to find such a thing would be at:

Unfortunately, it looks as if Olaf hasn't had the time to do many ACW ranges or an ACW comparison. Maybe he could use some help?

Rafm also makes a 25mm range and Bicorne produces the old Connoisseur range.

Dixon, like you Mosby65, I do not mix with other lines.
Sash and Saber , I will mix with Foundry.

This is likely more a personal preference situation than anything else. If stuff mixes OK for you then well and good, if not, then don't do it!! I hesitate for others to tell me what works and what doesn't. It is, after all, just our personal opinions, in the end, about what works and what doesn't!

While nothing like the comprehensive list you are after, I did post some comparison shots of Sash and Saber, Perry, Old Glory (1st) and Crusader on my blog. It might be a start if you know how any of those match up to some of the others. Compatibility is always in the eye of the beholder.

What you say is true, as far as it goes. But I for one would have been grateful for a figure scale compatibility table telling me that, in the table author's opinion, the Redoubt cavalry was so much larger than a Sash and Saber or Dixon cavalry before I bought it. It would have, at least, encouraged me to proceed with more caution.

The issue of personal preference is easily addressed. Just include a series of exact scale photographs of figures in similar poses from different manufacturers standing next to one another and let the viewer decide for himself. Spiffy Iguana has the right idea.

Yep some comparison photos wouldn't hurt a bit to help make a descision easier for many potential buyers. This is the perfect place for such comparison shots to be available also! In the end some will care a lot and some won't as much or at all! Thats just the nature of the hobby and it is neither good or bad, it just is!!

I'm willing to take on the responsibility. But to do the job right I will need the 12 manufacturers I listed plus RAFM and Connoisseur to send me samples of their 25-28mm figures. I think an infantry regiment's worth apiece would do nicely. Now let me calculate the chances of that happening; Sigma 12 carry the 4 multiply by the square root of negative 1…hmm…doesn't look very promising.

Size of the figure is not really an issure, but it is good to know, for those who like to keep their figures all the same height. What really matters, more than anything else is the size and length of the rifle. That is what will really stand out if it is disproportionate.. The other accoutrements don't matter that much. And people are all different heights and widths. But if you have figures at right shoulder shift or shoulder arms, the difference will be clearly visible if the rifle is too short!
