Dear Forum,

3-ott paintbrushes for painting the larger areas of the 15mm Napoleonic figure, after the primer has dried & you're ready to start your first color. What paintbrush sizes to use on small detail areas, 5-ott, 10-ott, or something even finer?

Regards,
Wayne

Small, smaller and smallest. Some guys work with a 1 on the 15s until they get to the smallest details and then they turn to a tiny one.

I paint 2mm up to 10mm and the smallest brush I use is a #1.

Get a good quality brush and it will come to a decent point and you won't need to go tiny.

I use W&N Series 7 miniature #1 for everything but blocking in the coat colours – for 15mm I might go as high as a #3 in normal series 7 and down to a #0. Smaller sizes don't hold enough paint to be useful.

I use a #1 90% of the time, otherwise a #0…

#1, #0 for detail, and very, very rarely, a #00. A good point and the ability to hold a brush load that will flow are much more important than brush size, as GildasFacit has said.

Always use the largest brush you can.

Yes, Rob; but you paint 'art', not armies, mate! grin

Dear Forum,

Thanks for the great tips….so, for painting 15mm Napoleonics, its' #1 ott paintbrush for the largest surface areas & perhaps a #0-ott? for smaller areas. Are 1-ott and 0 ott paintbrushes generally coded as 1 & 0, in the U.S. arts and crafts stores, or is that U.K. codification classifications?

Red Sable paintbrushes, I hear are the best to buy? Anyone have any specific brands of these #1 & #0 brushes that I should purchase?

I purchased a set of "Daler-Rowney", natural hair paintbrushes today, but a #1 or #0 wasn't included in the set of 7 brushes. I bought these to do drybrushing, apply Pledge-Future Floor Finish, and also to apply Min Wax Polyshades' Wood stain….not to specifically paint 15mm Napoleonics.

This set includes 1 pointed round,1 Rond Pointer, 1 Flat Shader, 1 Script/Liner, 1 Filbert, 1 Fan, and 1 Angle Shader brush. Is this a good starter set?

I look forward to the forum advice on buying the 1-ott and 0-ott brushes that you mentioned.

My kindest regards & thanks,
Wayne

Wayne,
I only paint 15mm AB figures.
For undercoat i use No 4 (sang art) Mård/Synet mix
For blocking out colours i use a No 2 (Sang art)Mård/Synet mix
Next stage 00 Mårdhår (Sang art)
For details & highlights 10/0 Rotmarder-Kolinsky (Springer Pinsel)

Dear Colbert,

Please clarify, do you use a spray primer before undercoating with the #4(sang art) Mard/synet mix paintbrush? If so, what is the name of your primer that you use?

Are the sang art paintbrushes similiar to the Kolinsky-Red Sable paintbrushes, which I've read are the "best"?

Are the paintbrushes readily available for purchase at most Arts & Crafts stores, or are they available only at special stores?

BTW, I enjoy watching your "Colbert Report" show on The Comedy Channel!

Many thanks,
Wayne

Wayne,
Yes i spray prime the figures, using colorworks(atm) white primer, before undercoat.
The Sang art brushes are available in Norge(usa i don`t know)
The Norsk translation of Mård is pinemartin & synet(synthetic) So the No4 & No2 are hair/synthetic mix.

Dear Colbert,

Thanks for the follow-up & clarification……the future opportunity for me to travel to Oslo, to buy paintbrushes for painting my 15mm Napoleonics is about the same for me to build swimming pools on the lunar surface….

Speaking of Scandanavia……have you researched and painted the Napoleonic Armies of your part of the world…..the Swedes and the Danes?

Appreciate your responses and you have excellent paintmanship skills!

Most sincerely,
Wayne
