Inspiered by the great painting of Angus McBride "Battle of Adrianople 378" I want to start a late Roman army in 28mm. Till now I only found Gripping Beast. Is this the right range for the Adrianople late Romans? What other manufactors are suitable and do they match with GB? Thanx Desertfox |

Foundry has an excellent range of Late Romans and Barbarians suitable for this battle. foundry figures will be a little bit smaller, as the GB are very tall fellows. |

foundry figures will be a little bit smaller, as the GB are very tall fellows. Foundry and GB mix just fine. Try also Black Tree Design, Crusader, Old Glory. BTD might be a bit large, OG, I've heard, can be a bit small and slight, and crusader matches with foundry and therefore, a decent mix. So I've heard anyway. |

Actually (for the 359th time, it feels like), it's surprising how well BTD and Foundry go together. I used to think they could not possibly, until seeing David Imrie (League of Ausgberg club) masterfully combine the two. This thread has links to photos of Mr. Imrie's units, but you'll have to wait a bit for the Wayback Machine's scheduled maintenance: TMP link Good eye candy, at any rate. Mr. Imrie's more recent Arthurians (GB) are well worth a look, too: link Allen |

How well does Essex go with the one's already mentioned? |

I'll second Allen's comments about BTD Late Romans. I think mixing them with Gripping Beast miniatures would work just as well, if not better, than with Foundry Late Romans as Mr. Imrie demonstrated. If you're willing to roll the dice on delivery (search the consumer affairs board here for comments on BTD) then BTD Late Romans are a good choice. And I think the GB Late Romans are good late 4th century Romans. Dave

Thanx a lot, I just love the "shielwall" miniatures from GB, itīs a must have for me. |

FWIW, here's my Late Roman size comparison shot:- link Cheers, Simon |

Thanks BRB. I have many BTD figures. That BTD officer pointing in BRB's comparsion is taller than any other figure in their LR range. The BTD LR horses are massive and I doubt if they will mix with any other manufacturers'. BTD do not make the cataphracts or horse archers. |

I was looking at the Imrie figures in Allens link; lovely painting, and particularly nice basing, with the mix of vegetation. |

For my Late Romans I use a combination of Foundry and Crusader Rank-and-file. The Crusader figures match Foundry both in size and style. The BTD figures are OK, but I had real issues getting them to rank if I cut spears to a "realistic" length. Damon. |

I must get a couple of the Crusader minis
I'm intrigued by the rounder shape of the Crusader shields, which I gather may be more historically correct than the ovals that come with the other ranges. Simon |

In addition to those mentioned above I recommend West Wind's Arthurian range and A&A's Roman Mobile Field Army. The latter may be a tad on the early side but once painted and if you give them the oval instead of the rectangular shield they would pass for Late Roman. Both ranges, by the way, are superb sculpts – but that is only my opinion as it is all in the eye of the beholder. |
