Hopefully the gentlemen and ladies here will not be upset at their breakfasts. Your concern as to the appetites of the country are not misplaced, Sir. Upon reading the account of General Pettigree's expedition, I was consumed by a not unnatural anxiety. I could hardly tackle my rashers and my Dear One was offput from her kippers entirely. A disaster of the sort that might well loom as per your dispatches would leave the country in a tumult and might well place Mr Gladstone himself in a jeopardy. One can but pray that the well known Fighting Qualities of our "lads in khaki" can rise to this most challenging of occasions, aided(of course) by that Heavenly Power that has always steadied the hearts and hands of Britishers through the ages. |
