OK, so I have it in my head to try some WSS stuff
not sure which direction I want to go, whether big battles or sirmishes in Spain. So many choices! Anyways, I was hoping some of the kinder folks here could suggest some of their favorite rules and ranges (both for 15mm and 28mm) so maybe I can sort ouit what I want to do. Thank you in advance :) |

I am just starting on this project also and decided to go with 25mm figures, "Warfare in the Age of Reason" rules. I've been playing those rules for some time using 15mm 7YW armies and very happy with the way rules portray 18th century linear tactics. Those rules are battalion level and really stress maintaining the line. I've played some other rules of that scale and like Age of reason the best for period flavor. For more "Beer and Pretzel" feel I would highly recommend "All the King's Men" rules, which you can download from their site for free. They are also battalion level and have very simple and clever mechanics. Rules work for any "horse and musket" period, from Marlburians to ACW. Rules are simple enough that you can introduce whatever period flavor you want by tweaking a modifier here and there. link They also sell 54mm armies for AWI. I played the rules at the convention a week ago and fell in love with them. As for miniatures I highly recommend Front Rank for 25mm and Essex for 15mm (if they have them). Other good 25mm company I had personal experience with is Old Glory. Their figures are not as nice as Front Rank, but better than average. You can also use 1/72 scale plastic figures. Uniforms of most troops were so similar during WSS you can use Russians and Swedes for any other country: link and link I am sure that there are other metal 1/72 manufacturers that make WSS figures. I think that someone posted a message about it on this forum today. I hope that helped |

A second recommendation for "Under the Lily Banners." We've been well pleased using 15mm figures. A nice sized battle can be played on a 4 x 8 table with 15s. |

I'm doing this and using Black Powder. It allows some good customization of commanders and units. I'm doing it in 28mm and will probably start really working on this period again when the Wargames Factory plastics become available. |

In 28's Mark Copplestone has released a range for the era. They look very interesting. |

I have Front Rank 28mm the most complete range from one manufacturer in this scale, cannot comment on 15mm. Front Rank have troubled themselves to represent different nations, British/French/Danes and generic but with Dutch and Austrian add ons; example specific grenadiers. Front Rank are more expensive than Old Glory but do discounts on larger orders plus battalion packs of 24 figures (12 cavalry). Hope this is helpful. Copplestone are 40 years earlier although lovely figures. Rules I use GaPa although as I like large games in short periods of time they have been modified to play quicker. |

You could also look at 10mm, Pendraken do a pretty full range for the WSS. |

I thank you all for your commentary and suggestions :) I am still not sure where I am going with this, but once the ball is rolling I will post updates :) |

Take a look at Might and Reason. link Here's the modulw that covers the WSS: PDF link Normally the basing is 2 bases per unit, size being width twice depth. Alot of folks use a two inch width. The group I play in chose to go with three bases 1x1 and act as if the width was 2inch, two stands. Mostly for looks. ; ) For 15mm figs we used Editions Brokaw, though the Black Cat figs look pretty good. As do Roundway and Essex. My 2 cents. |

We are soon publishing a Lace Wars expansion module to Age of Eagles (Napoleonic Fire & Fury) which will include several WSS battles, as well as complete commanders and army lists. You can go to our Website (URL below my signature) and download our free Oudenarde scenario, and take a look at the photos from the absolute blast of a game on Malplaquet we put on at Fall In 2009. For my stuff I use Editions Brokow, Minifigs and Essex. Regards, Bill Gray ageofeagles.com |
