Hundvig Fezian is not a real big fan of pre-painted minis, and he positively despises randomly-packed "collectable" ones - so why is he writing this article?

Anyone know where I can pick some old style VW Beetle cars in 28mm?

PMed you – might be able to get you some.

If you can find a 28mm model of the KDF-Wagen or the Kommandeurwagen Type 82E, that will basically be a Beetle.

Though the 82E was the Beetle body on the Kubelwagon chassis, it's probably close enough. Tamiya makes one in 1/48th scale, which might be close enough to 28mm scale, especially as many 28s are really 30-32mm!

As camelspider mentions, Tamiya makes one in 1/48. It has both military and civilian hubcaps/wheels. I already have plans for the one I have.

Vitesse, a Portuguese 1/43 diecast manufacturer, made a large range of old Beetles. Not sure if they're still available, or if 1/43 will be near enough in size, though.

Best one (in my opinion) was the open top with only ropes for doors – the Polizei special.

I removed the central divider on the rear window of my Tamiya Beetle and painted it, red making it a 57 model (I think). I'm going to use it in Vietnam for a bit of scenery.

Hotwheels also make a diecast in 1:50 scale if you're prejudiced against 1:43 for some reason.

This is the polizei door-less model I was talking about:

Cool, aye? … or bloddy cold, actually, in mid-winter Germany!

And for more Beetles, try this site …

A VW Beetle is quite reminiscent of the Police cars current in use in some states of Mexico. White body with green fixtures and a flasing blue light (no siren) on top. That was another life.

cheers,
