Years after I first splashed yellow paint on an Austrian Gun carriage and thought
"at least they'll provide good vis in murky conditions" I have finally found a colour that i believe is close to correct and looks right. GW's Bubonic Brown. Its yellowish with a hint of mustard's and looks the part. Now its a matter of going back and changing all the old pieces to the new colour. Then re fixing the barrels that I'll no doubt accidentally splash with the new colour as well. If anyone thinks I've got it all wrong then please let me know before I go crazy with the paint. regards Max |

Yeah thats a good colour. I use it as a base coat for all my yellows actually. Just add a little cream to highlight. I find all the other yellows Ive tried to be too sickly. |

Thanks Blucher. Thats the second opinion I needed to go ahead. Max |

Thanks for the helpful advice – I have just bought a Front Rank Austrian 3-gun battery, so very timely |

GW = Games Workshop. The shops that sell Lord of the Rings, Warhammer etc. I'm glad I was in time Federick because I found getting a good colour for them was a pain. :oP Max |

Because I have some 15mm Austrian artillery of the Wars of the French Revolution to paint, I visited one of Austin's gaming stores yesterday, in search of GW's Bubonic Brown. The local store had it, and I almost bought it. But I decided to see if any Reaper paints (which I really like these days) had an equivalent color. To my eyes, Reaper's Goldenrod Yellow looks just about the same as GW Bubonic Brown. I don't have anything against GW paint; I just happen to like Reaper. |

Did you try the Foundry colours with their artillery specific matched historical schemes? |

FWIW Coat d'Arms paint colour no. 126 'Festering Brown' is the old GW (Citadel) colour 'Bubonic Brown'. |

Dear Forum, I have the "Howard Hues" paint called Austrian Artillery, which is a yellow ochre color
.is this color similiar to color mentioned in the above posts? I had a painter who painted up ALL of my Austrian Napoleonic 12-lbers & 6-lbers with black iron gun barrels, as opposed to the bronze gun barrels that I thought I'd be receiveing
..should I re-paint them all with bronze(gold paint), or did in fact the Austrians artillery arm use iron gun barrels? Would iron gun barrels appear as black tubes, or would they have "bronzed over" iron artillery tubes? Since we are talking about painting the Austrian wood carriages the correct colors, thought the subject of their artillery gun tubes, should be addressed. Regards, Wayne |

Hi Wayne, as far as I know the Austrian tubes were bronze painted over black. I use a very dark almost black steel paint I found somewhere and have husbanded ever since. On my 15mm pieces it says "I'm black but I'm also metallic." The bubonic brown is a yellow Ochre. Which gives us a list so far of. 1. Games Workshop- Bubonic Brown 2. Reapers- Goldenrod yellow 3. Foundry- Austrian artillery 4. Howard Hues- Austrian Artillery regards Max |

Max I use foundry 4A Ochre atm for Austrian carriges. Going for the darker bronzed barrels rather than black in future. Trying to work out if I can be bothered picking out a new colour for French/Austrian/Russian etc carriages from Foundry or if I'll jsut but the main colour. picture |

Thanks Custor. Nice looking figures BTW. I didn't know foundry had paints until you mentioned it earlier in this thread. (The is one game store with miniatures in my state and the next is over 1000 miles away.) I'll go check out their online store. Regards Max |

The barrels were bronze, which I used, until I to discovered that they were painted black. Of course yellow and black was the imperial livery. |

Can someone please give me evidence, preferably from contemporary art, that Austrian gun barrels were painted black. I can understand the ironwork being painted black, but I can see no advantage to painting bronze. The military reaction to this metal is to polish it since it gives work for the troops. |
| Chouan | 17 Nov 2009 12:45 p.m. PST |
Perhaps paint it so that the troops don't have to polish it? |

Dear Forum, In regard to the Austrian Napoleonic artillery gun tubes
.I was told that the reason that the Austrian had "black" gun tubes is that the metal was iron, not bronze
the use of iron gun tubes was a carry over from the SYW, and a remedy and choice due to economics
.iron gun tubes were cheaper to produce than bronze. I have ended up with a mix of Austrian Napoleonic ordnance
..all of my Austrian 12-lbers, 6-lbers, and 3-lbers, that were painted up before 2007, all have bronze gun tubes. Those painted since 2007, have black gun tubes, which denote iron artillery gun tubes
.. Regards, Wayne
