So this is rather bizarre. I can cross post something to the modern and sci-fi boards but not for some near future thing, I could cross post this to the 40K board. So any of you that say that 40K is silly, take a look and see some of it in real life. link Now is it possible that the photographs were taken on Halloween? I suppose, but man, those are some pretty elaborate costumes. I get decked out sometimes but I've never gone so far as to get the boat painted red. |

It's going to be pretty hard to hit anything with that MG42. It doesn't have a barrel. |

Do you think those blokes with MG42s (or are they MG3s?) realise that they don't have barrels fitted to their weapons

I imagine there's a good chance they are MG42's |

So much color they would make a fun militia unit to paint for AK-47 Republic. You could even make them regulars and bestow some name on them like the Chosen Ones

I knew I'd seen these guys before: link
IIRC, they were on their way to some parade or some such event; hence the missing barrels from their Spanish-model MG-42 knock-offs

Stupid! Those are plasma guns, so no barrel. The plasma is enclosed in magnetic fields generated by highvoltage tesla inducers. But where are the chain swords? |

OK I can id the MG42s and that looks like a Gimpy, but the last picture, the guy on the right with the leaves in his dut, what is that gun??? |

Perhaps they intend to use harsh language instead of a hail of lead to subdue the enemy? They are clearly dressed in Mk. 1 Mars cammo. |

They look like the Haradrim from the Peter Jackson LOTR film. -Eli |

why is this a sci fi topic, and what does this have to do with people who think that 40k is silly? so some paramilitaries in Nigeria tote barrelless MGs whilst wearing red -- when they are not sending me e-mails addressing me as "beloved?" that somehow makes less silly a dead, 10,000 year old emperor magically transporting ships through space with his mind? |

I think Pictor's original post suggests that contemporary military forces are not averse to silly, vivid, ostentatious garb, dressing in a manner that is more for psychological effect than effective combat. By extension, if people do it now, it isn't completely impossible to think people will do it in 20,000 or 40,000 years in the future. It is conceivable that human nature might not change much even in that amount of time. Most of the Earth's population claims to believe in some sort of invisible being that controls their fates. Is that going to go away sometime soon? By extension, using a chainsword or dressing in bright red power armor is certainly unlikely, and probably detrimental, but might be done anyway for psychological purposes. Especially if people you believe wholeheartedly tell you that's the way to do it. I LOVED seeing the link provided. I find it fascinating that that sort of thing goes on in the 21st century. |

Hey, Red Redemptionists was Lazerburn wasn't it? (I'm sure I've got some 15mms somewhere) |

Definitely an MG-42, the barrel was made to come out for quick changing. The MG-36 couldn't do that. Not sure about the newer model versions, can't see why they wouldn't keep that feature. |

"I think Pictor's original post suggests that contemporary military forces are not averse to silly, vivid, ostentatious garb, dressing in a manner that is more for psychological effect than effective combat." picture I'm not quite sure *what* psychological effect the Turkish army is shooting for there

It looks sort of like a shotgun, but one of the other guys has a FAL. Count Natokina. |

"if you met these "silly" guys in real life you would soil your drawers in seconds." Only if I was dumb enough to even venture in to their turf unarmed and lacking an appropriately large armed escort (at least battalion-sized armoured infantry kampfgruppe)
