Hi Guys
I know some Italian Line Regiments served in the Peninsular but did any Italian Light Infantry Regiments or Croatian / Balkan Regiments serve there?
I just want some "Green" coated "French / Allied" troops to tangle with my Brits,…
Cheers

Hi,

The Italian 1st and 2nd Light Infantry served in Eastern Spain, buf I'm not sure if units from the 3rd and 4th did or not. Without checking, i'm thinking not. They didn't fight too much against the British though. IIRC, no Croats involved in Spain. The 3rd Etranger/Irish Legion did fight in Spain and they wore green coats as did, if memory serves, some Nassauers.

Just quickly looking in Haythornthwaite's Uniforms of the Peninsular Wars, the four btns of the Régt de Prusse are in "holly green" faced scarlet red with Prussian shakos. Later it changed to French light infantry dress of green faced red. (I thought they were blue, too, Rudy, but I think I had the picture in my mind's eye of the Hesse-Darmstadt troops in 1806-style Prussian uniforms from the same book.)

There's also the Coburg-Saalfeld Btn shown at Gerona with green coats, orangish-yellow cuffs and collar with red turnbacks (no lapesl); brown blanket roll and breeches with below-the-knee black gaiters; French-style shako but with Austrian-style oak leaves field sign. (An officer is shown in a bicorne; with long-tailed coat; and light blue pants.

And, BTW, the plate description for the green-clad Irish Regt doesn't mention the Croatians at all.

Other Italian Peninsular Units:

Anglo-Italian Levy / Italian Legion

A 2 battalion unit formed form Italian prisoners in England. Austrians commanded the first regiment and other foreigners in Sicilian service the 2nd

Calabrian Free Corps / Calabrian Light Infantry and Rifles

raised by Sir John Stuart in Sicily. Two battalions: Uniform as British Light infantry: yellow collar and cuffs, dark blue piping, white turnbacks, gold lace loops and epaulettes; brass shako-plate, green plume, red sash, sky-blue breeches, black belts, steel scabbard, gilt sword-hilt, gold knot..
Alternative: dark green coats, yellow collar and cuffs, and white piping and turnbacks; either light blue trousers or bluish grey overalls; tapered light infantry shako with a green plume; white metal badges, shako trim and buttons. Or: blue-green coat for the Rifles only.

3rd 'Estero' Sicilian Infantry Regiment

Like the British Line infantry but coat was dark blue, with shoulder straps, piped in white. The cuffs, collar and turnbacks were red, with white piping. Summer issue trousers were white, but winter issue was dark blue, with grey gaiters. The light company probably replaced the shako with a type of top hat with a green plume.

They all fought at Castella in Spain, for example.

The Croatian Regiments did not have a green uniform until 1812.

Is there any infomation available for Battles that Italian Units were involved in in the Pensinsula?

Id like to paint up some as allies for my French but would like to be somewhat historic in choices…. thanks.
