I'm looking to read a couple of books about the history of modern china and anything related to it. I'm looking for books on Chinese philosophy as it relates to the development of modern china, the development of the current chinese system of government and so on. Anything that deals with social services in China gets top billing as well. |

I do not have time this morning, but I just read a great History book about China and I will find the name of it this afternoon. Mike |

It's already somewhat dated, but there is Spence's The Search for Modern China |

Modern China: The Fall and Rise of a Great Power, 1850 to the Present by Jonathon Fenby. This is a very good read. I was a Chinese History Major and there is a lot of material that one needs to cover in this time period and Fenby does a very good job. Sorry I could not recall it earlier. This is not as specific as what you want, but this will give you a good frame work on understanding how the PRC got to where it is now. Mike |

Do you mean modern China pre or post tiananmen square? There's a fair bit of difference between the two periods. Fenby is an excellent starting point, but I'd say it may be a bit light on the last twenty years – which is the most dynamic period of "modern" Chinese history. |

I guess I mean modern as in post-tianamen square but I'd like to review the whole thing. Thank you for the recommendations so far. I have two months to get something together so I have time to read a general overview of the past 200 years or so plus a few books on more recent stuff. I appreciate the input so far, thank you Mike and Skeptic! What else do you recommend, McWong73? |

" I'm looking for books on Chinese philosophy as it relates to the development of modern china, the development of the current chinese system of government and so on." OK, Two places to start are Sun Tzu's THE ART OF WAR, as it is still required reading in the PRC's officer training academies, as well as fairly common in Chinese business circles, and Mao Tse Tung's YU CHI CHAN (ON GUERILLA WARFARE).
A quick Google search yielded these bits: link
