I am painting French for the battles of Orthez and Tolouse in 1814. Some of the units are from various branches of the National Guard. Would these units have carried Eagles, regular tricolor standards without eagles or some other kind of flag? I cannot find them anywhere. Specifically I am working on the Basque-Pyranees National Guard. Can't find any references or illustrations, and I am using Fantassin's excellent Marie-Louises as the models. But I digress – any info on these guys will be most appreciated.

No

Eagles were something really special and it would have been VERY surprising that these would have been carried – only the Emperor could grant an eagle and he would give it himself to the regiment/unit

The national guard of 1815 did have eagles but these were given at the camp de mai in early june 1815 by the emperor and are now actually in Aspley house in London where they can be seen (standard 1815 pattern but with silver braiding and inscriptions).

This does not mean that the national guards did not carry some form of standard etc. but I cannot think of one specific type for these.

I assume your national guard is wearing the peasant's coat and basque berets ?

Thanks, Yves,
I thought as much. No the figs. I am using do not have peasant's coats and berets. If you know where I can find some in 15-18mm, let me know!!!

In the meantime, I am using Fantassin's "Marie-Louises." They have overcoats and forage caps. They look scrawny, and a little shorter it seems to me, than the rest of my Peninsular force, which is mostly made of of ABs. I am painting them in a pretty motley fashion, with a variety of cloth colors and textures – especially that wonderful Peninsular brown.
