Just a quick query that I hpe someone can quickly help me with. I am putting together the Cologne contingent for the WSS, I have uniform colours for the horse but nothing that says if the cuirass was worn and if so was it worn over or under the coat?

Where did you find the colors? Do you have the infantry colors as well?

I do not think they had a Cuirass. I'll check for sure tonight. I have both the CS Grant book and the uniform guide on CD. Either one should give a clue.

The sketches in the Editions Brokaw publication of Kuhn show no breastplates and they're not mentioned in the text other than stating, "The 'French' fashion seems to have encompassed the lack of an externally worn breastplate,…." (Which could be taken to mean it was worn under the coat, but as there's no description of colour or the like, I'd guess they didn't wear them.)

Hi Scotty,

Sorry for the late response. I have the Electorate of Colgne Uniform CD by Robert Hall and Martin J Berg. Uniforms of the Electorate seem to be a bit varied. The same shade of blue is not necessarily used throughout the army. They are taking the information from a painting of the ordination at Lille. I'm not sure if this is a painting of an ordination at Lille or if it is housed at Lille.

Anyway, the lighting in the picture suggests that some uniforms could be medium blue and others light blue. They seem to think that the uniforms are not as light as sky blue in any case. No mention is made of a Cuirass so I would suspect that the Horse in the Electorate's army are unarmored. Here is what I have from the plates on the CD.

Hartschiere Leibgarde zu Pferd
Medium or light blue uniform with red cuffs. White hat trim. Blue lining and breeches.

Chassonville Dragoner
Scarlet uniform with white cuffs and lining. No hat trim. White lining and ivory breeches.

Leibregiment d'Arco Cologne
Scarlet uniform and black cuffs. White hat trim.
White lining and ivory breeches.

Dolbenstein zu Pferd
Perl gray uniform with black cuffs. Yellow hat trim. Gray lining and ivory breeches.

Leibregiment Dragoner, Nothaft
Medium to light blue uniform and white cuffs. No hat trim. White lining and breeches.

BTW musician uniforms seem to be blue for red wearing cavalry regiments and red for blue wearing cavalry regiments. Probably all have white lace.

Hope that helps.

They had horses as they are listed in a few of the big 4 battles of the period.
