I'm looking for books/articles on the varoius patterns, colors and meanings of the symbols and colors. I'm looking for more scholarly works on the subject. They can cover all types of North American tribal groups.

Thanks,
Andrew

"Mystic Warriors of the Plains" by Thomas Mails is a must have. Check out art books by Turpin, Caitlin, Bodmer and Remington.

Anything on the East coast tribes. I remember Conquest Miniatures had a section on warpaint and the meanings of the colors and symbols. I'm wondering abouth the sources for that.

Thanks for the list 79thPA.

Osprey has a book entitled "American Woodland Indians" that may be of use to you. I don't have much on Woodland Indians and what I do have is packed up, so I am afraid I can't be much help to you.

I would suggest you google Robert Griffing or John Buston to see their portraits of period Indians, well researched. He has at least a couple of books on the subject too, showing his many paintings of same, as Bob concentrates on Eastern Woodland Indians, especially those involved in PA during the F&I period.

I'll second Griffing. Awesome stuff!

I love his Ft. Necessity print!

Brandon is a re-enactor portraying a mid-18th Century Woodland Indian. He has found a lot of original information about specific topics as the title suggests. I have a copy; a superior source. I found this work very helpful to me when adding to my Woodland Indians back in 2005. I did not need to make things up any more as a result. And for only $11.00!

His email to me today says he always has the booklet in stock.

Bill
