I'm ordering some Ultra moderns (1980s "Cold" war vehicles) Back home in the UK I have Bruce Rea Taylor's books. But I have nothing with me. I'm trying to remember platoon and company composition for British tank & mech, American tank & mech, and Russian Motor rifle and tank company. I think it goes something like this Tank company Russian Platoon of APCs – 3 vehicles Russian Company of APCs 3 platoons + command Motor Rifle company Russian Platoon of APCs – 4 vehicles Russian Company of APCs 3 platoons + command American platoon of tanks – 4 vehicles American mech platoon – 4 vehicles American company – 3 platoons + command + extras (like ITV) British – don't know at all! Is there a short answer to this question? |

Tank Companies (HQ then platoons.) US – 2 + 3x 4 Veh. ('86+) US – 2 + 3x 5 Veh. (Older or USMC) Soviet – 1 + 3x 3 Veh. Brit – 2 + 3x 4 Veh. W Germ – 1 + 3x 4 Veh. Mech Inf Companies US – 1 + 3x 4 Veh. (M-901s were from support company, but a common attachment. Infantry weapons include 3 Dragons per platoon. Pre-86 still 4 to a platoon, but M113s rather than Bradleys.) Soviet – 1 + 3x 3 Veh. (Some units also had a small weapons section attached to the HQ with 1-2 vehicles, but I'm not sure of dates / how common.) Brit – 2 + 3x 4 Veh. (FV432, Warrior only started appearing very late in the '80s. Usual was two FV432s with MG turret and two without. I think the 30mm ones in the Berlin brigade were 3 to a platoon, with the HQ vehicle just having an MG turret.) West Germ – 2 + 3 x 3. (Marder I – at this stage Milan was just one per platoon, and two Carl Gustavs. CHQ had no anti-tank kit, but may well have a Redeye SAM.) |

Thanks Dom, that was brilliant. |

No problem. As an afterthought, I'm not entirely convinced about the US mech HQ – one vehicle is from the Rea-Taylor book, but it might be worth getting a second vehicle just in case

Sovs for MRC are 1x APC Command 2x APC MG/Anti-Tank 3x 3xAPC This was standard through the post war period for front line forces. Warpact and lower readiness units were primarily 10 apc total. Joe Collins |
