How have you based the flying ones so that they don't fall over? I was thinking a big washer and some brass tubing, maybe?

Haven't started on mine yet, but your' idea is what I was thinking.

I based my 3rd Pennsylvnia Aerial Dragoon Zouaves using VERY LARGE GW flying stands.
I glued a 12" piece of brass tubing perpindicular to the base in the center. (I may be off on the height, but it is exactly half of the length of the brass tubing I got at the hobby shop.
I used a bulleted brass rod for the "male" part of the assembly. Yes, I have gotten comments about it…

But, to answer your question, no heavy washer. I really should, since they tip easily.

Weren't the 3rd tipsy most of the time, anyway ? ? evil grin

Oddly, I just finished basing these two days ago..:-)

What I did:

Epoxied the lead square thingie onto a slightly larger washer.. Drilled out the lead to take a nail about
2" long, about twice as thick as a paperclip.

Epoxied the nail in place, making sure the hole in
]the washer was filled. This ensures that the nail won't
twirlon you.

Drilled out the flyers going from the crotch..
(I didn't like the 'hole-in-the-chest').

The nail was then either left straight for those figs
without a spear.. and bent in a shape like this:

*
--* (dashes are for spacing only)
----*
******
*
*

The figs were then epoxied to the nails.

The 'angle' goes in the butt.. and the spear just
touches the straight part and can be glued for more strength.

Epoxy rather than super-glue (which I found wouldn't
hold). The nail for the same reason.. the wires RAFM
provide are way too thin and will loosen..

Sounds…. painful….

Just used the rods and bases that came with them, glued to coins. They seem fine.

You can't see the bases themselves in this pic, but you can see the little guys flying around…

The minion has had his belly button drilled out to take the rod. The Emperor has his rod inserted somewhere somewhat more… intimate.

Where the Emperor inserts his rod should remain personal.

Plynkes: I bought them second hand, and no bases were to be had with them.

Sherlock: I had thought about repositioning the hole as well. It just seems so… invasive.

OFM: I had thought about the rod/tube sort of arrangement as well, so the bases could be removed for easier transport. Do you find that 12" serves well? I would think that was a bit too high, somehow. I was thinking more about 6" high, myself.
