I have just watched a brilliant "Old West" type film. It is actually set in Australia but I think you would like it. The film is "The Proposal". It opens with a shoot out. Two brothers are captured and the older given the choice of letting the other guy, his younger brother, die or capturing his older brother. Great stuff I tell you!

Yep, saw it. Not bad.

However, my understanding is that it's actually called "The Proposition":

Yes, "The Proposition" is an incredible film, a bit intense, but definitely absorbing.

Just a tad over the top on the symbolism what with the drunken white troops singing Rule Britania with their hands' still covered with aboriginal blood.

Will check it out for sure. Thanks for the heads up.

Sorry, I agree with M C LeSingeDew. I thought it was a waste of Guy Pearce's talent.

It was a clever idea with good costuming and set design. The writing was very predictable and unfortunately predictably bad.

I thought it rather good.

It was written by Nick Cave, waddya expect ?

As a matter of interest, does anyone know any really good bushranger films ? There was a TV series on the Kelly gang that seemed very impressive when I was a teenager, but I've not seen it since: both the film versions were atrocious.

>>both the film versions were atrocious.<<

If one of the ones you're talking about is the one with Mick Jagger, all I can say is "amen" to that! It looks like it was shot with an 8mm camera and a budget of 10 cents. Jagger doesn't act so much as sort of walk around and mumble things. Talk about capitalizing on a big name. Sheesh! Paying the Mick is probably where the whole budget went. LOL

The poster for it was pretty interesting though. (-:

That's one of them. Aside from a couple of good songs (strangely enough Waylon Jennings rather than the Mick), nothing to recommend it.
The Heath Ledger version is marginally better in that the Stringybark Creek shootout is very nicely staged. The script isn't much better, and then there's Orlando Bloom in drag.

The TV series was "The last outlaw", starring John Jarratt and Steve Bisley, directed by George Miller. Sadly there only seems to be a DVD for the Australian market.

Check out the mini series "Robbery Under Arms" starring Sam Neil as Captain Starlight. Not bad, but isn't as action packed by todays standards.

I'm of mixed views about the Proposition. It's not rubbish, but certainly has some big flaws as noted above.

Quigley Down Under. A cracking western set in Australia.

I haven't seen that 'Robbery under arms', rather enjoyed the Peter Finch version a long time ago.

Does anyone remember a '70s TV series about Ben Hall ? It must have made some impression on me as a very young child because I know I've seen it, but can't recall anything else at all.

I love 'Quigley' dearly, but it's more of a western on tour than an Australian film.
