Hi all,

Just starting out with my first Napoleonic army, British in the Peninsular War.

I'd like to paint them using Vallejo Model color, and was wondering which color to use for their coats. I was thinking nr. 817, Scarlet. Am I correct in this?

I use GW scab red as a base, then I use 817 Scarlet as the main colour.
It is possible a tad too bright but at such a small scale as 28mm you want something that is quite vivid. Works a treat.

Nah, too bright won't matter, I'm gonna dip 'em. Thanks!

I've started using a base coat of Vermillion, washed with GW devlan mud, re-highlighted with vermillion, then a final highlight of orange red. It works a treat for me.

But dont use too much orange red, if you can help it!

It all depends if you want a new looking unit or one thats been in the field a few years. Remember that the dye used was very poor and the colours would run due to the lack of setting agents.
I think that for the other ranks a more washed out orange colour was the norm for their jackets, the NCO,s would have a better material for their jackets and a more expensive dying process used, offices again had a better material and their jackets would keep the colour better.

To try and answer the actual question, i use Dark red-925, Red -cant read number, with orange red-(Two numbers on this bottle) 027 and 70910! Works for me on a black undercoat.
