All this talk about old editions of GW got me wondering how many folks still play old editions of rules or totally out of print rules.

I play Napoleons Battles 1st Edition and will probably never leave it. They're the only set of Napoleonics I have liked playing.

All the CCG games I play are OOP or older editions.

Ron W DuBray04 Nov 2009 7:35 p.m. PST

I do, I mix RT and 2nd ed 40k and some house rules.
would play more if I could find gamers and had time.

D6 Junkie04 Nov 2009 7:43 p.m. PST

Still play Armati and AK-47 first editions

Sundance04 Nov 2009 7:43 p.m. PST

WRG 6th, 1776 (minis rules), plus some Avalon Hill board games.

Let's hear it for 1776, also.

Why on Earth would one NOT play an old game?
Unless you are a mindless sheep, of course.

Rattlehead04 Nov 2009 7:54 p.m. PST

I still play Flashpoint!

Broadsword04 Nov 2009 8:13 p.m. PST

Yep, have picked of 4th Ed. rules for 40k this week along w/ 4 OOP Codecies. I also have downloaded the Battlefleet Gothic rules and am presently collecting Eldar and Chaos ships.

I owned both games previously but not for almost 10 years.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP04 Nov 2009 9:04 p.m. PST

Another R'RtFer, Gush's Renaissance, 1776: love 'em.

Pictors Studio04 Nov 2009 10:11 p.m. PST

I'm still playing Space Hulk 3rd edition which is no longer in production.

rmaker04 Nov 2009 11:04 p.m. PST

Yes. Fletcher Pratt, for one. And some sets of house rules that neve were in print. Oh, and Source of the Nile, of course.

wolvermonkey04 Nov 2009 11:06 p.m. PST

Yes if I get the chance to play.

The Outlander04 Nov 2009 11:21 p.m. PST

Yes, AD&D 2nd Ed Massed Battle Module.

Grizwald05 Nov 2009 2:22 a.m. PST

Of course! Just because a set of rules are no longer "in print" doesn't mean they are suddenly no use any more.

Parmenion05 Nov 2009 2:33 a.m. PST

Yes, so far as I am able to play anything these days (which isn't very much). Mostly old GW games, a few others.

Martin Rapier05 Nov 2009 2:49 a.m. PST

Yes of course, why on earth wouldn't I?

Photonred05 Nov 2009 6:09 a.m. PST

The Fantasy Trip RPG.

nazrat05 Nov 2009 6:35 a.m. PST

We've been playing BFG, Warmaster, Necromunda, and Man o' War lately around here. Not all are really "out of print" or "dead" but there's a layer of dust on everything so they sort of count.

The Monstrous Jake05 Nov 2009 6:40 a.m. PST

I've gone back to my stash of SPI games. I can play them on the wall of my office. SPI folded in, when, 1982?

The Fantasy Trip RPG.

I second that recommendation!

Captain Apathy05 Nov 2009 7:12 a.m. PST

Lots and lots, yes.

Ditto Tango 2 105 Nov 2009 7:19 a.m. PST

Does D&D count? grin

Crossfire is out of print AFAIK

Tim

doublesix6605 Nov 2009 8:37 a.m. PST

Yep we play D&D 3.5, Warmaster, Necromunda, Man o' War, renegade legion & Warzone

GypsyComet05 Nov 2009 9:08 a.m. PST

Heck, most of the DBx line is technically "out of print" 90% of the time.

Recent OOP games I've played include Azhanti High Lightning, Ogre Miniatures, Amber Diceless, Battlefleet Gothic, and D&D 3.5. I'll play HOTT on occasion as well.

Andrew Walters05 Nov 2009 9:14 a.m. PST

I don't care a bit whether something is in or out of print.

Andrew

SpuriousMilius05 Nov 2009 9:51 a.m. PST

I 2nd what Shagnasty said, and it's 1st Ed. Boot Hill for my Wild West 4 Ever!

Moonbeast05 Nov 2009 11:14 a.m. PST

Yes…Star Frontiers, SpellJammer, L5R 1st ed., Call of C-dog and Delta Green as well as C-dog now, SLA industries, Fading Suns, C-Punk 2020 and C-Punk Cyber Generation. Good times.

Feet up now05 Nov 2009 11:17 a.m. PST

Pre clan BattleTech,Space Crusade and warhammerquest all not too bad to set up and more enjoyable the further in you get.

Dave Knight05 Nov 2009 11:31 a.m. PST

WRG 6th, Gush Renaissance, Retinue regularly.

Being out of print is irrelevant to me.

ming3105 Nov 2009 12:20 p.m. PST

Block mania , Swashbuckler ( still a favorite beer game) , Bue max, Classics never go out of style

Space Monkey05 Nov 2009 1:21 p.m. PST

Rogue Trader with bits of 2nd ed… original Ogre/GEV, Chitin, Confrontation 3…

Most of the rules I've bought lately have been out of print… Flashpoint, a third copy of Rogue Trader, a supplement for Inferno, Ragnarok, a bunch of old Judges' Guild stuff.
The only one I'm not sure I'll play at least once is Ragnarock… I bought it mostly for the fluff book.

Saxondog05 Nov 2009 1:51 p.m. PST

To me, the original game is usually more fun then later editions. Original Battle tech, Blood Bowl, Rogue Trader, D&D, …and several board games that are no longer in print.

If I like a game, why quit when the publisher does?

Topkick89005 Nov 2009 2:31 p.m. PST

That's about all I play -- Warzone, Chronopia, Legions of Steel, & Necromunda (original box set)

Lentulus05 Nov 2009 3:13 p.m. PST

Not since Charge came back into print; but in-print-ness is not a decider. Certainly played lots of never-printed rules.

Farstar05 Nov 2009 4:07 p.m. PST

"Just because a set of rules are no longer "in print" doesn't mean they are suddenly no use any more."

This statement makes plenty of sense, and will get the support of many gamers. Until you ask them why they aren't playing something anymore, that is. The OFM's comment about sheep is far more applicable to gamers than we like to admit.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP05 Nov 2009 6:24 p.m. PST

Of course, if it was a good game them it should be a good game now and I'm happy to use old rulesets. Don't care if they are OOP or not. Don't care if they are "supported" – whatever that means (some kinda truss fund I suppose) – or not. I mean, I have the rules, I have the dice, I have the figures and scenery, what the hell more do I need anyway ?

Space Monkey05 Nov 2009 6:52 p.m. PST

One thing I've noticed is that I'm usually happy with the updated versions of rules that are NOT put out by miniature companies… but, except for GZG, I suspect most rules updates from miniature companies as being more of a marketing scheme than a real improvement to how the game plays.
I'm mostly thinking of GW, Rackham and Privateer.
Mostly prejudice and stuperstition… but that's what's in my head.

Ruben aka Qwirz06 Nov 2009 12:57 a.m. PST

I love old games. The pre-miniature era. I think they reahced an high quality level, hardly reached again. AH Gunslinger, the best ever. Swashbuckler. Star Fleet Battles, Squad Leader, Cry Havoc, Space Hulk (Hey! Do I like tactic level???).
GW first ed are absolutely better than newest. Marketing is the enemy of quality.

RRR

Martin Rapier06 Nov 2009 4:41 a.m. PST

"The pre-miniature era."

This must be an age thing.

I had over a decade of minis gaming before I even saw SFB (1st ed).

Who asked this joker06 Nov 2009 11:24 a.m. PST

Another for OTR…or I would play it anyway. Probably a bit better than FnF if only because of its simplicity.

Also another for 1st ed Nap Battles.

GoodBye06 Nov 2009 12:50 p.m. PST

Yes, yes I do; especially as I'm probably out of print or at least out of date also!

Space Ghost08 Nov 2009 6:55 p.m. PST

Yes, Confrontation 3rd Edition.

dafrca09 Nov 2009 1:26 p.m. PST

I can not imagine someone who does not. Almost any game I have bought will be bought and I would never try and "ungrade" everything. Too painful IMO.
