C Nice shots – have just done a small unit of 1st Corps as imitiation legionaries for Pontics. I notice you went to slightly deeper bases to accomodate your chaps. I had some issues with fitting them on 20mm deep bases! Well cast but really too small – they are OK when alongside Crusader figures but hobbits against Renegade or Essex. Your Essex Pontic light cavalry has inspired me to continue with my task of revamping some Hinchliffe Greek light cavalry – with shields and LBM transfers they will be fine for Pontic light horse. Like you I used some Essex Seleucids as Pontic brazen shields (with Crusader embossed shields). Still not entirely happy with the figures I have for the Pontic noble cavalry (Battlestandard Late Persians). Cheers Garry |

"Well cast but really too small
" Hardly, if one is using them with Ranges such as the old Foundry range, or with Gripping Beast, or with Newline, or with Magister Militum (ex-Navgator). Clearly you need to do as I have done and have "small 28mm" Republican Army, and a "large 28mm" Republican Roman army, with corresponding Carthaginian armies! Renegade? Pah. Silly giants by any reasonable measure! Allen |

Thanks for the comments, folks. Garry/Mithridates, I used Essex Seleucid Agema as part of the Pontic army, mainly because I couldn't think of anything else at the time. The horse is nicely caparisoned, and maybe with another rider it would do for Pontic aristocrats. If I get time to finish reworking them, I'll post some photos. Let us know how you get on with the Hinchliffe Greeks; they sound ideal for Pontic light horse. I agree with you about the base depths. 1st Corps are quite actively posed, and I couldn't see how I could possibly get them onto 20mm depth bases. Also, the rules we are using give Romans the ability to deploy in a single rank, and 20mm just doesn't look right. I can see why Allen has been accused of starting some sort of earth-bound hypermass; I'm struggling to do one Republican Roman army, never mind one "small" and one "large". All that metal! Of course, he could just be joking, couldn't he!? I never even remotely considered Renegade, though. Cheers to all Paul |

Great progress Paul! I wish I was painting as fast, this month. There's certainly nothing wrong with a lot of the smaller ranges, and some advantages; more choice, for example. I felt I had to go either small or large, and jumped for the latter. If I had already owned more of the smaller figures I might have jumped the other way. Simon |

The only thing wrong with 'smaller' armies is that my eyes are not what they used to be. I do have one of those head sets with magnifiers but when/if I venture into 15mm I may need jewellers' glasses! It's the fiddily bits – leather surrounds on shoulder pieces for instance – that are a pain. Given that I buy from a range of manufacturers Allen's notion of small and large armies is not that far from the truth. Now, what we need is a comprehensive range of comparison shots – Allen, can you oblige please? |
