I bet the army guys had a field day with this picture.

Looks like someone's using it as a tracked field latrine.

You just know that somebody said "Hey, let's send them back to Jerry – loaded!"

You're a Redditor, aren't you? I almost posted this myself after seeing it there.

I think those are "Goliaths." They were loaded with explosives to be used as very, very slow (but guided) artillery shells.

Yep, Goliaths. They were supposed to guided by guys in Tiger I tanks. They were too slow and too vulnerable, and a waste of several Tigers.

christot05 Nov 2009 2:30 p.m. PST

They were mostly used by engineers/or in static positions (like the D-Day pics).
In the Funklenk units the Goliaths were controlled by the stugs, not Tigers, what the Tigers were for I'm not sure..covering the Stugs I guess. Exactly how these armoured units were suppossed to perform is still a bit of a mystery. There was talk that Nicklas Zetterling was going to do a book on it but that didn't happen.
The Funklenk units seem to have just got used up as "normal" tank units. I imagine the units they were attached to were quite happy to get the support of a few Tigers.

LOL--great pic---I do hope they disarmed them first!! The command tanks were knackered Tigers converted with the remote control equipment and the main armament removed…Goliaths wern't very succesful but are up there in the 'cool' weapons league (alongside Tiger II, Komet, ME262,Panjendrum etc etc)

Rod Robertson06 Nov 2009 12:14 p.m. PST

So, are these S.P.G.I.'s?

christot06 Nov 2009 4:40 p.m. PST

My mistake, the Tigers were the control tank in the units.
They weren't "Knackered Tigers" (any more so than any other),but fully functioning, "normal" Tiger 1's and retained their armament.
