I'm thinking of building a small wooden for out of doweling and some odds and ends. I haven't really settled on a style yet and was thinking of keeping it fairly generic so that it could be used in fantasy and historical games for a variety of armies, notably early imperial romans, medieval/dark age russians and goblins. I've been searching for historical examples of various forts around the world but my google-fu is weak and I'm not getting the types of pictures I'd like. Can anyone point me to other people's projects or decent online pictures and explanations of fort design? |

Look under Google images for "motte and bailey castle diagram" and you will find plenty of inspiration. Jim |

Thanks, that helps some. I tried roman fort, hillforts and some other variants and more often than not got sites with no pictures or actually photos of the sites today. Grassy hills and post hole indentations wasn't all that inspiring. |

Palisade fort or Ostrog might pull up more information through Google. Check also Eastern European medieval forts as they would look nice for a fantasy setting. In addition, there is a Terrainmakers Yahoo group that have good photos of palisaded forts. link At my blog, I did cover the construction of a star fort using simple and cheap materials: link Cheers, Robert 18thcenturysojourn.blogspot.com |

There is a very generic one that shows up on ebay now and again (not from me). If you'll send me your email (and anyone else interested) I'll send you copies of the pics. If y'all do send me an email, please put "TMP request" as the subject line as if I don't recognize the sender/subject, it will get deleted without opening. I'm at parusj at saic dot com JJ |

Get this book: The Medieval Fortress: Castles, Forts, And Walled Cities Of The Middle Ages, by J.e. Kaufmann & H.w. Kaufmann. It has some great illustrations of motte and bailey fortresses, including some nice cross sections on various types of palisades/walls used in that period. Not only will this give you some great ideas but overall I found the entire book to be a great read. link |

@BaggySausage: Very nice. Didn't the romans have a pretty standard camp layout that they used? Nevermind, just checked the Wiki entry, that'd be a huge structure. You'd want a smaller one for gaming. |

The one I did was for the Khador Warmachine faction. I did it in the shape of that faction's logo. |
