I am looking at a cataphract army and I have some of the A+A cataphracts. The armoured horse is approximately the same size as an unarmoured Old Glory ACW horse I have, but is actually a bit shorter. To my eye, the horse is a bit too small for the rider. On a recent post a contributor mentioned the new Vendel Parthian horse archers, also on a beautiful horse. On the Vendel website however, it also looks to me that the Vendel Persian cataphract horse is a bit small. The Crusader Numidian horsemen I have are mounted on huge horses!(on the Ebob horse). I do not have any Old Glory cataphracts to make a comparison. What models are you guys using and who do you feel has the best proportioned horses? And as an aside what is the best value? |

Hi, the new Vendel horse looks very much like an eBob horse in style, but is very much smaller. It is the same size as an A&A horse-archer horse, but rather thinner in the legs and slighter in build. I would imagine that Vendel will also be producing a new Parthian Cataphract horse. I'm hoping that this will be slightly larger than the archer's horses, because cataphracts presumably rode bigger horses capable of carrying heavier loads. I've not seen pics of their cataphract horse yet; have they been posted? Or are you looking at the older Persian range? They have a new sculptor, now. I'll be posting some Parthian size comparison shots in the next week. Cheers, Simon bigredbat.blogspot.com |

I've not held the new EBob horses (used by Vendel for the Parthian horse), they come in 3 sizes and the pics look fantastic. Would be interesting to know which size Vendel used. The older EBob sculpts, used by Crusader, Artizan, Musketeer and others are what I primarily use for remounts. Perry's horses are also of the highest quality. It gets expensive, but I have purchased Perry cavalry packs just for the horses. Front Rank's horses are very good also, but very big. |

I wouldn't worry too much about them looking on the small size for the rider. At least some breeds of horses were smaller in the dark ages than today. Norman war horses, for example, were around 12 hands, IIRC – maybe a touch smaller, it's been a while. |
