Having never before been tempted by a 'Cataphract Army'I think I may have been seduced after seeing A&A miniatures Palmyran range on their website. Now before I part with any cash do any of you gentleman have any experience with this range? I have only bought a few of their Macedonian cavalry previously and frankly didn't really like the style of the horses, is this so noticeable under scale trappers? Any comments, links etc gratefully recieved.

Beautiful figures. You cannot use the armoured camels for a Palmyran army in FOG (officially anyway). Yes I think the cataphract horses are a bit small, but I have not compared them to any other ranges. I would spring for A+A if I could afford a whole army. The armoured infantry in hoods are nice as well. Rob.

Thank you Rob, The size of the horses isn't too much of an issue for me rather the general anatomy and as for the camels I think I would buy some just to paint even if I didn't game with them. But 'beautiful figures' may just sway it for me, particularly with the £100.00 GBP for 16 packs deal.

Horses are beefy, but under the barding isn't super noticable. The Palmyran range is a really nice one, and now that they've finally come out with light cavalry, it is a "complete" range (or at least as much as it could be).

I think the Canadian and Britsh economies are similar in that we earn and spend dollars as you would pounds. Problem is 2+ dollars equal one pound so think of your 100 being 225 plus shipping. Very nice figures. Can't use the camels (but I have some anyway) and the horses are a bit small for the cataphracts making up the bulk of the army. So I will think long and hard about A+A. Some of the nicest figures available however. I got a 5 pack deal. Afraid to recall what it cost. Rob.

The current exchange rate (as of today) is £1.00 GBP equals $1.64. So not $2+. Shipping is only 20% of the order (reasonable IMHO). At todays exchange rate each infantry pack comes to $16.74 USD with shipping, or $2.09 USD per figure. A little on the high side for historicals, but not outrageously so, and IMHO each figure is definitely worth 2 bucks.

$1.75 USD for Canadian dollars, but still not 2+. I'd also say "we earn and spend dollars as you would pounds" is deeply flawed – 2008 UK median full-time earnings were around £25K ( news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8151355.stm ) – I can't find the Canadian figures offhand, but for 2005 the median was $41K ( link ) which would imply an exchange rate of about $1.60 USD for equal spending power, putting UK goods effectively at a 10% premium rather than the 100% plus you seem to think….

Does that mean I can get a refund beacuse the rate was different when I bought last year? :)

8.99 pounds for two camels and riders. So that is as close to 8 Canadian per camel as I care to get. Postage is fixed percentage, customs is a crap shoot…. ( I think A+A is Irish-no?)
My only point is they are beautiful figures. But by my reckoning they are pricey.

Palmyrans are a bit sketchy as the majority of the army would be horse cataphracts and the cataphract horse (again, by my reckoning) is not the nicest piece in that collection.

I would also have a look at Vendel Miniatures – they are bringing out a full range of Parthians and the horse archers look superb:

Vendel were kind enough to send me some of the new horse archers so that I can do a size comparison shot for my blog.

Their new horse archers are really very nice; the horses are medium sized, well detailed and extremely graceful. I'm waiting for some minis to turn up from other manufacturers, and will take some shots later this week.

Now I want to see how the cataphracts come out!

Cheers, Simon

Dear Simon,
How big are the new Vendel figures?

Those Vendel Parthians look really nice, not their usual stiff pose. It will be interesting to see what their cataphracts look like. The A&A Palmyran cataphracts are some of my favorite 28mm figures.

I've got some of AA's Sassanids and they are great.
I'd be tempted to have a number of Palmyran cataphracts on unarmoured horses.
Anyone got a view on this?
