Do most of you who play the Sudan campaign paint up your Egyptian units in Summer, all white, or winter, blue, uniforms. It looks as if most of the major battles happened in the winter months January-March.

thanks,

I did the Egyptians in their nice white summer uniforms, but the Sudanese battalions with blue winter jackets because they look nice too. Officers generally get blue jackets.

My Osprey said the Sudanese wore brown jerseys and blue puttees is this correct or did they wear the same as the Egyptian regulars?

What time period? I painted mine as the early war (until 1885)so I could use them against the British as well as the Ansar.

Egyptian – all white
Sudanese – Blue coats with white pants
Officers – all blue
Artillery – most crews white with one crew blue
Egyptian Calvary – white tunic with blue pants

The Sudanese didn't switch to the brown jersey until after the early Sudan campaigns were over. On the frontier, both Egyptians and Sudanese wore their white uniforms, although one Sudanese unit(the 11th I believe) wore a zouave type uniform.

Actually in the early Sudan both Egyptian and Sudanese units were in white. Officers might wear the blue uniform or maybe white tunic and blue trousrs. There was a Sudanese unit around 1887 that wore a blue pullover with white trousers and blue puttees-maybe the IXth. The Britsh were re-organizing the Egyptian army at that time and introducing khaki uniforms with blue puttees. Brown and blue pullovers were also worn. My early Egyptians and Sudanese are quite ragged with patched clothing and some blue trousers. I add tissue paper havelocks and turbans -soaked in white glue.

Thanks, I am planning early campaign so will go with the all white uniforms. I will have to look into the 11th Sudan that would be fun to include Zouave unis.

Like many others, I did mine in early colours so they could fight the Brits too. I can sort of pretend my blue jacketed Sudanese are also post reform Sudanese in blue jumpers (even if they have got white trousers, well, the khaki dye didn't turn up or something).

Yes, a great article. That automatic posting feature is really neat.

I haven't done any yet but if I do it'll definitely be white for ORs and blue for officers.

Another vote here for white
