I just received this new book this weekend. Very well written, as William L. Shea's other books (notably Pea Ridge). It's nice to see this little known battle in the trans-Mississippi get major attention. The dust jacket has an excellent new painting by Andy Thomas. The historian at the Prairie Grove State Park, where I visited a couple of weeks ago, read the manuscript covering the central fight for the ridge, and told me Shea did a thorough and accurate job. I'm looking forward to getting there.

I just finishing a second playtest of the eastern portion of the battle this past weekend in preparation of putting it on at Fall In. It is an exciting battle, and I look forward to exposing more ACW enthusiasts to it.

Will have to pick this one up… being from Arkansas.

Mark, how was your trip? Did you post a report on TMP? I had not heard of "Fields of Blood" and will have to get it. A few months ago I purchased "Embattled Arkansas: The Prairie Grove Campaign of 1862," by Michael E. Banasik. It is out of print and quite expensive. Had I known Shea had a volume in the works I could have saved quite a bit, although it will be nice to compare the two books.

Wolverine,

I posted an overview of my trip to Missouri and Arkansas under the subject "Best out-of-the-way/overlooked ACW site" in the discussion topic heading.

I had read Banasik's book a while ago and enjoyed the detail. The park ranger at Prairie Grove said that Shea told him Banasik was a little uncritical with his sources. Funny,I could say the same thing about Shea's and Hess's book on Pea Ridge. Well, if there is one thing I've learned is that no one writes the perfect history. Shea is very readible and inexpensive from the book clubs and amazon.

BTW, I also picked up a couple of Banasik's books on soldiers in Mosby Parson's Missouri Brigade, as well as a book on the Battle of Carthage, Missouri on July 5, 1861. My trans-Mississippi library is growing. :-)

Rats, again. Another book to spend my limited post-retirement dollars on. Love Shea's books.

Thanks, Mark. I hadn't been on that thread for a while. Glad you had a good time. I hope to get out there myself.
