Hello! I'm looking for books on the history and mythology of the middle east/arabic region in the 10th-12th century. Ones with illustrations would be a plus, but not required. Thanks in advance!

I ahve found several on the Arabic expansion during that era. These are general history books and not strictly for wargaming.

In regards to books with a wargaming slant, there are several: Osprey has many Men At Arms as well as one in the Warrior range on the Saracens. Concord books has some nice plates on the Arabs in the book called 'EL CID'. of course their is the data on several aspects and not just uniforms in the WRG Amries and Enemies books covering that era.

Not real sure what you're really after. Could you elaborate on what you're looking for, please?

Also, what do you mean by "Arabic region"? Everywhere Arabic was spoken during that timeframe, or actually the Arabian Peninsula? Do you really mean the Middle East, or do you want everywhere to which Islam had spread, such as al-Andalus (as Rudy suggests)?

Within those parameters, "history" is easy to suggest. But what is your intent with "mythology"? Apart from the odd djinn and ifrit, there's not a lot of what we'd consider "mythology" appendant to Islam. Do you mean the heroic tales of Rostam and other characters form the Shahnameh, carried forward from the Persians?

Finally got home after a long presentation meeting with the national Weather Service. great data but a long day of 12+ hours.

A History of the Arab Peoples by Albert Hourani. The great Arab Conquests by John Bagot Clubb.

many works on the Arab expansion into the Sahel can be found in books by Arab and convert scholars of the time. Some of these have been translated into French but only a few in English. Most of the Sahel works inEnglish are 1800s era.

i will look and see what my bibliographical sources were for my article on the Safid era of Persia that Allen mentions.

I know that Rudy meant to write "Glubb". grin

I'm inclined to recommend the various Muslim historians of the Crusades, but I'm still not sure what Wallyocerous is really after.
