While at the local Hobby store I found the Penguin Toob. I bought two tubes, because I think Killer Penguins would make a perfect combat unit for a generic fantasy army. The only question is: is there anything simple I can do to make them look more Killer-ee? I'm going to mount them on white wood, or maybe light blue drybrushed with white, and thought maybe I'd paint a little blood on every third beak or so. Any better ideas?

Here's what I'm talking about:

Stick a cigar in a few beaks.

lots of blood and some skeletons painted to look like gnawed bones on the base?

The elite of the Killer Penguins have steel-tipped beaks. They are ferocious adversaries if they can ever catch up to you.

GWAR can kill a lot of penguins. Even if they are radioactive and on crack. I've seen it.

Put a bandana on a couple of them + a knife, sword etc. on their arm-flipper-thingy.

Fantasy setting or silly sci-fi? If the latter, consider adding bits like shoulder-mounted missile launchers, tiny radar dishes, etc.. Try to make one look as much like James Bond as possible. grin

If fantasy, you clearly need a penguin shaman (necklace of fishbones, seal-skull tipped staff). Arm others with icicles or walrus tusks as spears/swords. The belly-flop penguins could be converted into "sliding cavalry," either equipped with other penguins as riders, or with icicle lances strapped to their backs.
(Check craft stores and Christmas shops for plastic icicle ornaments. Another possible source might be plastic swizzle sticks— check with party shops. A quick google turned up these: auction )

Have fun!

Does anyone remember playing Age of wonders and the frostling unit dire penguin? link great pics and info to give you the feel of cold menace with those red beady eyes.On the modelling front how about a cartoon frown added by fine liner and some armourcast blasts if you use a magical attack approach.Even strips of plasticard painted as armour plates with rivets attached.

I'm watching Batman Returns right now. The most menacing penguins in cinema.

Red Eyes.

Believe it or not, the eyes are already red. I really like the cigar/cigarette idea, and the steel beaks. May also put a frozen arm sticking out of one stand. Thanks for the great ideas…

Back in the 80s there was a set of fantasy RPG rules – possibly Dragon Roar? involving killer penguins, with a figure range attached

Copplestone also does killer penguins
