I have a few books on vietnam from Osprey, such as the one on VC.

Does this sound right?

VC in black pajamas with a few odd t-shirts in (very olive) olive drab
NVA in (very olive) olive drab and prob with wide range due to fading
US in olive drab uniforms & equipment with slightly more sandy helmets

Oh botties! I meant Vietnmam.

NVA uniforms can vary between olive and khaki.

US helmets had a camo cover that heavily faded in use.

The VC vary more than the NVA and the black pjs are a good way to instantly tell them apart on the gaming table.

Sounds good to me.

For my US uniforms I like Vallejo German Uniform. Lightened with a sand color it really makes that odd blue-green-sage color that the uniforms faded to.

Thanks for the feedback. Luckily I have that german uniform vallejo colour. Will give it a go.

What scale?

Dont' forget that early NVA uniforms were Sky Blue, as encoutnered in the Ia Drang, mixed in with the Khaki. Early Main Force VC used NVA castoffs until they were "reorganized" after Tet and were more properly uniformed.

For US helmet covers, I like to use Vallejo Grey-Greren as the base, then use German Camo Brown and Reflective Green for the camo, then a light dry brush of the Grey-Green to give it the fade.

15mm Command decision.

I haven't seen any pics of the sky blue uniform. I will prob go for post Tet.

I painted all my NVA in khaki and VC in black. I did this simply so that you can quickly tell which figures are on which side.

I've found that with a great deal of green bush terrain on the table and all the figures painted in one shade of green or another it can be difficult to tell whose figures are whose.

Maybe not the most accurate histoically, but for game purposes it has worked very well.

I painted my enemy forces in three patterns:

NVA – green with sun helmets.
VC Mainforce – mixed green, black, tan with hats.
VC Local Force – black with hats and some rice paddy hats.

Are you using quite an olive green vince?

Actually I used Pollys F505072 RLM 83 Light green with a light Tudor dip.

USMC uniforms were sage green.

The Army was more olive but tended to go toward sage the more they were washed since there was a very high bleach content added when they were laundered, …which for the field forces didn't happen often enough.

The picture above is of GHQ Marine infantry with the "green side out" helmet covers which were normally installed in country.

The picture above is of an actual uniform of the period illustrating the sage or light olive color and the link below takes you to some details regarding the actual Army uniforms…

Hope this helps… Will
