I've heard a bit about this game and just finally got to looking at the miniatures, and that got me highly interested! I realize Cipher just took them over not too long ago, but I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to buy the miniatures here in the US?

Also,is this a rackham like situation where there's a cool line of miniatures but the only rules are in french?

Currently, there is a PDF rulebook in English, and there are stat cards available online for most of the range.

There are updated stat cards, so far officially available only in French (although fan-versions are available on their forums).

I heard that Asmodee took over the line…

Eh? No. Asmodee are the people Cipher took it over from.

Fantization were the folks who imported the line into the US,
I believe they may have some left in stock:
link
They area trifle expensive, but the service is very good-

Another company that I found very nice to deal with is
Maelstrom Games:
link
It looks like they have quite a bit more in stock, too-

Shipping from maelstrom takes about three weeks vs,
three days from Fantization, but you save about 30% with free shipping.
Its about even, in my opinion.
Both good folks to deal with.

The Hell Dorado figures are really excellent, but somewhat fiddly:
They are sculpted more according to true anatomical proportions
than the usaul exaggerated fantasy fair
(although you wouldn't know it to look at the new Landskneccht concept)

I ended up buying heavily into Hell Dorado;
the combination of the absolutely fantastic Immortals Faction
combined with the (at the time) imminent demise of the line
caused a bit of a buying frenzy on my part {sigh}-

Its not exactly a Rackham situation, but closer to than not:
The figures are currently not in production (but are coming back)
and the rules arecurrently only in French (but with English PDF's).
Hopefully all that will sort out once Cypher kicks it into gear-

I'm glad that somebody picked up the line,
and Cypher being a US company is a bonus (if yer in the states)
but my understanding is that production
won't really be back into swing until early 2010.

All said and done,
I think Malifaux is as good, if not better, than Hell Dorado,
and a lot easier to get into right now.
Hopefully once production is back on line, interest will pick back up

In my Dream World,
Wyrd would have picked up the Hell Dorado line,
and cross-compatible stats would exist for both miniature lines,
in both game systems……
