Hey all. A buddy and I have played some Mordheim, and some SoBH and we've enjoyed both games. We like the skirmish type battles alot and so I thought I'd poke around and see if anyone else had some recommendations for skirmish fantasy games?

Level of detail's not important, SoBH is probably the 'simplest' and it's still a lot of fun. We'd like to stick to generic rules or rules that allow custom building of armies.

Beyond that, we might be interested in something more detail than less, if it's a good system.

If you like what you have, why not stick with that?

Broadsword Adventures from Rattrap is very detailed, including specific hits of different areas of the body. It's lots of fun and surprisingly enough it runs very quickly, too. link

Pig Wars might also meet your criteria…

Savage Worlds Showdown is a generic miniatures skirmish combat game that can be adapted to any genre. They've just come out with the alpha version of a new edition.

Broadsword, do you have a more up-to-date link for the One Page Fantasy Skirmish rules?

Anima Tactics looks pretty cool. So does Malifaux.

Along the Mordheim vein,
both Malifaux and Hell Dorado are quite excellent;
they both have a dedicated line of miniatures:
that's either an advantage or a serious drawback, depending.

Here's a thread that lists quite a few more:

LDK627 – It seems that site has been taken down. Your best bet would be searching the internet for an email address for Mr. John David Slor, the author of the rules.

Another vote for Reaper's Warlord 2nd edition & Two Hour Wargames Warrior Heroes: Armies & Adventures.

Grabula04 Nov 2009 12:05 p.m. PST

I've heard good things about the 2 hour wargames set, may have to check that out.

Warlord is specific to Reaper's minis isn't it, or do they have a generic build your own system?

zerozero04 Nov 2009 2:03 p.m. PST

Reaper's Warlord has data cards. You can assign any model you want to any of the data cards in a given list, just need to let your opponent know what is what. So yes they have a generic build in a sense.
