Hi All,

I recently bought a 25mm / 28mm Tibetan army (ancient or medieval by my guess) , which I know very little about…

*** Where can I learn more about them? ***

*** Who makes appropriate figures for the reinforcements my Tibetan army will surely need in the future? LOL ***

Thanks!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

My army is made from Irregular Miniatures. I think the references for the figure design (from the 1980's) is now suspect; but, they are painted and look good. IIRC there is a Back of Beyond range (Coppelstone?) that makes a more modern looking(1920's) Tibetan cavalry and some very nice pack yaks grin in 28mm.

"Trespassers on the Roof of the World" by Peter Hopkirk tells about the efforts of foreigners (primarily British) who tried to enter Tibet. Includes an account of Younghusband's expedition that invaded Tibet and battled against matchlock-armed Tibetans.

Copplestone has Tibetans if you need reinforcements.

Oh, the history bit. That article on the Army of the YarLung (sp) was in the 1984 or '85 Slingshot.

Some of the Copplestone cavalry and infantry carry matchlock rifles.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art did an amazing show in 2006 on Tibetan arms and armour. They also did a superb coffee table-style book. I don't think there's a better single source on Tibetan military dress.

We are planning to do a 28mm Tibetan army to complement our Ming Chinese (still in the drawing phase). Releases are planned for next year.

No info forthcoming from me unfortunately…..

I will say the Curty's miniatures do some excellent Tibetans:

Also don't forget "Essex Miniatures" they have some nice Tibetan figures. Most books on Chinese history,"Tang" period cover the Tibetan.

Christopher Beckwith, "The Tibetan Empire in Central Asia"; and for something with a far broader scope, his more recent "Empires of the Silk Road". Both available from Amazon.

Another vote for the Curteys miniatures.
