In an effort to give the Eureka Tyrolians some colourful opposition, I tried a mash-up project with left-over plastic bits. They are far from perfect but I think they might just get the job done. Excuse the slap-happy paint job.

picture

The heads were the Carabinier heads from the Perry Heavy cavalry. A dollop of green stuff had to be applied to the top of the helm to round it out.

The figure with the arms at the port is a Victrix British flank company body with Victrix French line infantry arms. I had to trim the belly to remove the detail of the British lace and opted to carve up the legs a small bit to remove trousers and make it more booty.French backpacks were used so the figure is weighed down by plenty of gear on his back.

The marching figure is a Victrix French infantry body with French arms and pack. The waistcoat is wrong and he gets shoes instead of boots but I can call that campaign mode. In order to get the cross-the-chest strapping, it was simply a small strip of paper affixed.

My thinking is that as I proceed with the unit, I'll go with the British torso.

Nice conversion! I like them.

Nice conversions, but is it worth it to build large regiments that way?

malcolmmccallum29 Oct 2009 5:55 p.m. PST

In a sense they are free since it is done with scraps after I'd built what I bought the figs for. I won't be making large units of these, no. Perhaps two groups of 12.

There's perhaps an additional 5 minutes work per fig when putting them together (not counting rooting around through sprue debris for bits)

HAT is making a selection of 28mm plastic Bavarians.

Thanks,

John

Nice conversions !

With HATs' schedule, it'll be y'ars b4 they are available :(

The sprues for HaT's Bavarians are already previewed on their website.

I like your conversions, very clever :)

malcolmmccallum30 Oct 2009 6:53 a.m. PST

Yup. I will force myself to wait for the Hat Bavarians. We all clamour for some plastics that are other than British and French so when someone finally does something as 'risky' as Bavarians, which I would want, I should support that manufacturer.

Private Matter30 Oct 2009 7:39 a.m. PST

Nice work. How compatable are HaT with Perry & Victrix though? This conversion may be the only option.

von Winterfeldt30 Oct 2009 7:45 a.m. PST

very nice helmets – congratulations the figures look great, in case you do further conversions – also make a bigger cartridge box flap, those on the figures look rediculously tiny

Are these soft plastic or something like Perry/Victrix?

Great, I'll have to see if my local store can get them ? Don't really need more Bavarians, just like the uniform ? <lol>

Have you seen the HaT 28mm figs…ahhh…they look awful. It is like upscaling a poorly done 1/72 Airfix figure.

Given the quality of other offerings I can't see HaT's 28mm jump-on-the-bandwagon foray being too successful. I have seen the greens for their Bavarians…and these too aren't too hot. You would need to do a lot of work on them just to get them up to the standard of today's plastics (Perry and Victrix).

I wish Zvedza would produce 28mm figs, as they have some great looking 1/72 figs that are based on 3-ups. Likewise, I would love to see Caesar Miniatures move into 28mm…as well as 1/32! I just got the new Caesar releases (German Paras, American GIs, German Panzergrenadiers #2, Greek Hoplites, and Persians) and they look really good. The faces are outstanding! The new Zvedza Polish Uhlans are also really nice looking! So let's push these two producers to make the move into 28mm and/or 1/32…

Thanks for the links. Superb figures, I really like the way they look. I've been looking for some Bavarian infantry and I'll definitely go for them.
